Medicare 2026
Deltona Medicare checklist: what to finish before the Dec. 7 cutoff
DELTONA, Fla. — The clock is ticking on Medicare's fall Annual Enrollment Period, and Deltona residents have until December 7 to lock in coverage choices that will start January 1, 2027. This is the once-a-year window when almost anyone with Medicare can switch, drop or pick up a Medicare Advantage or Part D drug plan — and the choices you make (or skip) now generally follow you into the new year.

Key takeaways
- The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, and any changes you make take effect January 1, 2027.
- The Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 in 2026 and $2,400 in 2027. The maximum Part D deductible is $615 in 2026 and $700 in 2027.
- If you already have a Medicare Advantage plan, you get a second window — January 1 through March 31 — to make one more change.
- Deltona is in Volusia County, and plan availability is set at the county level, so compare plans using your ZIP code on medicare.gov.
With 2027 bringing a higher Part D out-of-pocket cap and other program updates, this fall is a good time to actually open the mail from your plan and compare what's changing.
What you can actually do before December 7
The Annual Enrollment Period (often called AEP or fall open enrollment) is the broadest of Medicare's yearly windows. Between October 15 and December 7, you can:
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or the other way around.
- Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
- Join a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan, switch plans, or drop your drug coverage.
- Return to Original Medicare and pick up a Part D plan to go with it.
Whatever you choose takes effect January 1, 2027. If you do nothing, your current plan generally renews automatically — but "generally" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, which is why reviewing the paperwork matters.
Read the Annual Notice of Change
By late September, your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan mailed you an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). It spells out what's different next year — premiums, the drug formulary, the pharmacy network, provider network, and cost-sharing.
If your plan is leaving the area, you'll also receive a separate non-renewal notice. That notice comes with a Special Enrollment Period, but acting during AEP keeps things simpler.
Pull out the ANOC and check three things: your doctors, your prescriptions, and your preferred pharmacy. If any of those are changing for 2027, that's your signal to compare.
What's new for 2027
A few program-level facts worth knowing as you compare:
- Part D out-of-pocket cap: $2,400 in 2027. Once your covered drug spending hits that amount in 2027, you pay nothing for covered drugs the rest of the year. The cap is $2,100 in 2026.
- Part D deductible: up to $615. Plans can charge less, but not more.
- Three phases, no donut hole. The coverage gap was eliminated in 2025, so Part D now has a deductible phase, an initial coverage phase, and a catastrophic phase.
- Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. This is an optional program that lets you spread your drug costs across monthly payments instead of paying at the pharmacy counter. You can opt in through your Part D or Medicare Advantage drug plan.
- IRMAA. Higher-income beneficiaries pay an income-related surcharge on Part B and Part D. For 2026, the surcharge begins above $109,000 in income for a single filer.
How plan availability works in Deltona
Medicare Advantage and Part D plan availability is set by CMS at the county level. Deltona is in Volusia County, so the plans you can join are the ones offered in Volusia — not a Deltona-specific list. The fastest way to see your options is the plan finder at medicare.gov, which asks for your ZIP code and (optionally) your prescriptions and pharmacy to give you a personalized comparison.
What happens if you miss December 7
If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you'll still have one more chance: the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31. During that window you can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare (with a Part D plan if you need drug coverage). It's a narrower window — you only get one change — and it doesn't help people on Original Medicare who wanted to join a Medicare Advantage plan.
Special Enrollment Periods also exist for specific life events, like moving or losing other coverage.
