Two Medicare structures Woodstock residents weigh at 65

WOODSTOCK, Ga. — If you're turning 65 soon or helping a parent sort through Medicare mail, you've probably run into the same fork in the road. On one side: Original Medicare, often paired with a Medigap policy and a separate drug plan. On the other: Medicare Advantage, which bundles things together through a private insurer.

Key takeaways

  • Original Medicare uses no network and lets you see almost any provider who accepts Medicare, while Medicare Advantage plans usually use HMO or PPO networks and often require referrals or prior authorization.
  • Medicare Advantage plans have a yearly out-of-pocket maximum built in, while Original Medicare doesn't cap costs on its own, which is why many people add Medigap and Part D.
  • Outside your initial six-month Medigap open enrollment window, insurers in most states can use medical underwriting, so switching from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare plus Medigap later isn't always easy.
  • Medigap only works with Original Medicare, so you cannot combine a Medigap policy with a Medicare Advantage plan, and plan choices depend on your county, which you can check using the Plan Finder at medicare.gov.

Both are legitimate ways to get your Medicare coverage. They're just built differently. Understanding that difference up front can save you a lot of second-guessing later.

Two different structures, not two versions of the same thing

Original Medicare is the federal program itself. Part A covers hospital stays, and Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient care. You can see almost any provider in the country that accepts Medicare, and there's no network.

Because Original Medicare doesn't cap your out-of-pocket costs on its own, most people add two things:

Medicare Advantage (Part C) works differently. A private insurer, approved by Medicare, provides your Part A and Part B benefits in one plan — usually with drug coverage rolled in, and often with extras like dental or vision. These plans typically use networks (HMO or PPO) and have a yearly out-of-pocket maximum built in.

Neither structure is universally better. They just fit different lives.

What that means day to day

With Original Medicare plus Medigap, you generally show your red, white, and blue Medicare card at the doctor. If the provider takes Medicare, you're covered. Your monthly costs are more predictable — you pay a Part B premium, a Medigap premium, and a Part D premium — but your at-the-counter costs tend to be low.

With Medicare Advantage, your monthly premium may be lower, but you use the plan's card, follow its network rules, and may need referrals or prior authorization for certain services. Your costs come more in pieces: copays for visits, coinsurance for some services, up to the plan's annual maximum.

Woodstock is in Cherokee County — here's the local piece

Plan availability in Medicare is set at the county level, not the city level. Woodstock is in Cherokee County, so the Medicare Advantage and Part D plans offered to a Woodstock resident are the same ones offered across the county.

Cherokee County residents typically have a wide slate of Medicare Advantage plans and stand-alone Part D plans to choose from, offered by several different carriers. Medigap policies, meanwhile, are standardized by letter (Plan G, Plan N, and so on) — the benefits inside "Plan G" are the same from one company to the next, though prices vary.

You can see the exact plans available at your ZIP code by using the Plan Finder at medicare.gov.

2026 and 2027 rules that apply either way

A few program-level facts apply no matter which path you choose:

Enrollment windows to keep on the calendar

One important note on Medigap: outside your initial six-month Medigap open enrollment window (which starts when you're 65 and enrolled in Part B), insurers in most states can use medical underwriting. That means switching from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare + Medigap later isn't always easy. It's worth thinking about that door before you walk through it.

A quick FAQ

Do I have to pick one or the other forever? No. You can change during the Annual Enrollment Period each fall. Just know that moving from Medicare Advantage back to Medigap later may involve health questions, depending on your situation.

If I choose Original Medicare, do I automatically get drug coverage? No. You'd add a stand-alone Part D plan. Skipping drug coverage when you're first eligible can trigger a late enrollment penalty later.

Are Medigap and Medicare Advantage ever combined? No. Medigap only works with Original Medicare. You cannot use a Medigap policy alongside a Medicare Advantage plan.

What do Star Ratings actually measure? Medicare rates plans from 1 to 5 stars based on things like customer service, member complaints, and quality of care. They're one useful data point among several — not the whole story.

Where to get answers you can trust

Medicare decisions are personal, and the "right" path depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, your budget, and how you like to handle paperwork. For unbiased help:

Take your time. This is one of those choices where a slow, careful hour up front is worth far more than a fast decision you have to unwind later.
