Saratoga Springs Medicare enrollment: what you can change by Dec. 7 for 2027 coverage
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period opened Oct. 15, 2026 and closes Dec. 7, 2026. Any change a Saratoga Springs resident makes in that window starts Jan. 1, 2027. If you do nothing, your current plan simply rolls into next year — assuming the carrier is still offering it — with the updates listed in the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) that landed in your mailbox in late September.

Key takeaways
- The Annual Enrollment Period runs Oct. 15 – Dec. 7, 2026, and any change you make takes effect Jan. 1, 2027.
- You can join, switch or drop a Medicare Advantage plan or a Part D drug plan, or move back to Original Medicare, during this window.
- The Part D out-of-pocket cap rises to $2,400 in 2027 (up from $2,100 in 2026), and the maximum Part D deductible rises to $700 (up from $615).
- Saratoga County residents can get free, unbiased help from New York's SHIP program, called HIICAP, before deciding.
That ANOC is the piece of paper worth digging out. It tells you exactly what is changing in your plan for 2027, and it is the reason the fall window exists.
What you can actually change between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7
The Annual Enrollment Period is the one time of year almost every person with Medicare can make these moves:
- Join a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan for the first time, or switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
- Drop a Medicare Advantage plan and go back to Original Medicare (Parts A and B).
- Join, switch or drop a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan.
Whatever you pick during the window starts Jan. 1, 2027. You do not need to cancel your old plan separately — enrolling in a new one generally does that for you.
One note that matters in New York: switching back to Original Medicare and then trying to buy a Medigap (supplement) policy is a separate decision with its own rules. New York has some of the most generous Medigap access rules in the country, but the timing and pricing questions are worth walking through with a counselor before you make the move.
What is different for 2027
CMS has confirmed a few Part D numbers for next year:
- The Part D out-of-pocket cap will be $2,400 in 2027, up from $2,100 in 2026. Once your covered drug spending hits that amount, you pay $0 for covered drugs the rest of the year.
- The maximum Part D deductible a plan can charge will be $700 in 2027, up from $615 in 2026.
- The Part D national base beneficiary premium for 2027 is $41.33. That is a formula input used by CMS — it is not what any specific plan charges.
A few other 2027 figures have not been announced yet. The standard Part B premium and deductible, and the IRMAA income brackets that add a surcharge for higher earners, are usually released by CMS in November. Until then, no reliable 2027 numbers exist for those — anyone quoting them is guessing.
For reference in 2026, IRMAA surcharges start above $109,000 in income for a single filer.
What "doing nothing" actually means
If you like your current coverage, you are allowed to do nothing. Your plan renews Jan. 1, 2027 with whatever changes the ANOC describes — a different premium, a new drug list, changed copays, a different pharmacy network.
The risk of doing nothing is not that you lose coverage. It is that the plan you renew into may not be the same plan you signed up for. A drug you take year-round could move to a higher tier. A doctor could leave the network. That is why reading the ANOC — even briefly — is worth the time.
If your plan is being discontinued for 2027, the carrier is required to tell you in writing, and you will get a Special Enrollment Period to choose a replacement.
The local picture in Saratoga County
Saratoga Springs sits in Saratoga County, where CMS lists 53 Medicare Advantage plans available for 2027, offered by 10 carriers. There are no stand-alone Part D plans listed in the county's landscape data for 2027 — a reader who wants drug coverage would generally get it bundled inside a Medicare Advantage plan (an MA-PD) or, if staying with Original Medicare, would need to look statewide at Part D options on Medicare's Plan Finder.
About 47,584 people age 65 and older live in Saratoga County, which gives you a sense of how many neighbors are working through the same decision this fall.
Star Ratings are CMS's yearly quality score for plans. They are one input among several. This year, the Saratoga County area has no contracts rated 4 stars or higher, so ratings are less useful as a filter here than they might be elsewhere; the drug list, provider network and total out-of-pocket picture tend to matter more.
Where to get unbiased help in Saratoga Springs
You do not have to figure this out alone, and you do not have to talk to an agent to get answers.
- HIICAP (Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program) is New York's SHIP. Counselors are trained, free and do not sell insurance. Saratoga County HIICAP can be reached through the Saratoga County Office for the Aging.
- Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov lets you enter your ZIP code and your drug list and compare every plan available to you side by side.
- 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) is staffed 24/7 and can answer general questions and confirm enrollment.
If you use a licensed agent or broker, keep in mind they are typically paid by the plans they sell, and they may not represent every plan in the county.
