Start with Ohio SHIP — free, unbiased, and local
Ohio's State Health Insurance Assistance Program (called OSHIIP) is the go-to first stop for one-on-one Medicare help. Counselors are trained volunteers and staff. They don't sell plans and don't earn commissions, so their only job is to help you understand your choices.
They can walk you through:
- The difference between Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medigap
- How Part D drug coverage works
- Extra Help and Medicare Savings Programs if money is tight
- Comparing plans during Open Enrollment
You can reach OSHIIP directly at 1-800-686-1578. Nationally, SHIP help is also listed at shiphelp.org.
Licensed agents and brokers: what they do (and don't) do
Licensed insurance agents in the Fairfield area can also help you enroll in a plan. Many are knowledgeable and honest. But it's worth understanding how they work:
- Agents are paid by the insurance companies whose plans they sell.
- Some agents only represent one or two carriers; others (called independent brokers) represent many.
- They must follow CMS rules — for example, they can't call you out of the blue or pressure you into signing up.
If you use an agent, a few smart questions to ask: Which carriers do you represent? Are there plans in my area you can't quote me? Will you still be reachable after I enroll?
What Fairfield's Medicare landscape looks like
Fairfield sits in Butler County, where Medicare Advantage plan choices are wide. According to CMS Medicare Plan Finder data, Butler County has 101 Medicare Advantage plans available for 2026, offered by 15 different carriers. Stand-alone Part D drug plans are counted separately at the regional level, so you'll see additional drug-only options on Medicare.gov when you enter your ZIP code.
With more than 62,000 residents age 65 and up in Butler County, there's plenty of demand — and plenty of marketing noise. That's exactly why unbiased help matters.
A few 2026 numbers worth knowing
Whether you talk to a SHIP counselor or an agent, these program-level facts apply to everyone:

- Part D deductible: up to $615, depending on the plan.
- The old "donut hole" is gone as of 2025 — Part D now has three simpler phases.
- Medicare Prescription Payment Plan: an optional way to spread your drug costs across the year in monthly installments.
- IRMAA (higher premiums for higher incomes) kicks in above $109,000 for a single filer in 2026.
Key dates to circle
- Annual Enrollment Period: October 15 – December 7 (changes take effect January 1).
- Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: January 1 – March 31 (for people already in a Medicare Advantage plan who want to switch once).
If you miss AEP, don't panic — Special Enrollment Periods exist for moves, loss of other coverage, and other life events. A SHIP counselor can tell you if you qualify.
