Huntsville is in Madison County, and Medicare Advantage availability is set at the county level. That means the roster below is what CMS shows for Madison County in its 2027 MA Landscape Source File — the same source the Medicare Plan Finder pulls from.
What's on offer in Madison County
For 2027, CMS lists 70 Medicare Advantage plans in Madison County, all of them Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans (MA-PD), meaning drug coverage is built in. Compared with 2026, 55 plans continue, 15 are new, 5 are not returning, and 6 have been renamed; 18 of the continuing plans change something in their terms, spelled out in each plan's Annual Notice of Change. There are no stand-alone Part D plans listed for the county in the MA landscape data — stand-alone PDPs are a separate CMS file — so if you want drug coverage alongside an MA plan, it will come from the MA-PD itself.
The eight carriers offering plans here are Aetna (CVS Health), Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, Blue Cross Blue Shield (HCSC), Devoted Health, Humana, Simpra Advantage, UnitedHealthcare and VIVA Medicare.
The carriers, in alphabetical order
Aetna (CVS Health) — 8 plans (HMO, PPO; 3 Special Needs). Aetna's Madison County lineup includes Aetna Medicare Signature Care (HMO), Aetna Medicare Eagle Plus, Signature Giveback, Signature Plus and Value Plus on the PPO side, along with three D-SNP options: Aetna Medicare Dual Care, Dual Extra Care and Full Dual Care.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama — 3 plans (PPO). All three are PPOs: Blue Advantage Choice, Blue Advantage Complete and Blue Advantage Premier.
Blue Cross Blue Shield (HCSC) — 7 plans (HMO, PPO; 2 Special Needs). These are marketed under the HealthSpring name in the roster and include HealthSpring Courage, Preferred, Preferred AL and Preferred Plus (all HMO), HealthSpring True Choice (PPO), and two D-SNPs, HealthSpring TotalCare and TotalCare Plus.
Devoted Health — 10 plans (HMO, PPO; 6 Special Needs). Devoted's Alabama plans span standard PPOs (DEVOTED CHOICE 002 AL, GIVEBACK 006 AL, MA ONLY 007 AL), an HMO (DEVOTED GIVEBACK 002 AL), three chronic-condition C-SNPs (CHOICE 010, CHOICE PLUS 015, CHOICE PREMIUM 011) and three dual-eligible SNPs (DUAL 007, DUAL PLUS 006, DUAL CHOICE FULL 014).
Humana — 19 plans (HMO, PPO; 5 Special Needs). Humana has the largest single-carrier count in the county, including Humana Gold Plus HMOs, HumanaChoice PPOs (both local and regional PPO variants), Humana Value Plus PPOs, Humana USAA Honor Giveback in both HMO and PPO forms, and D-SNPs such as Humana Dual Select and Humana Gold Plus SNP-DE.
Simpra Advantage — 3 plans (PPO; 3 Special Needs). All three are SNPs: Simpra Advantage Dual Care (D-SNP), Simpra Advantage Assist (I-SNP) and Simpra Advantage Nursing Home Plan (I-SNP).
UnitedHealthcare — 12 plans (HMO-POS, PPO; 6 Special Needs). UHC's lineup is a mix of AARP Medicare Advantage HMO-POS and PPO plans (AL-0001 through AL-0004, AL-6 and the AARP Medicare Advantage Patriot No Rx AL-MA01), plus UHC Complete Care and Dual Complete SNP variants and a nursing-home I-SNP.
VIVA Medicare — 4 plans (HMO). VIVA offers Classic, Premier and Select as HMOs and Extra Care as a D-SNP.
What "plan type" actually means
- HMO plans usually ask you to use in-network doctors and hospitals and often require a primary care physician and referrals.
- HMO-POS (point of service) plans work like an HMO for most care but let you go out of network for certain services, generally at a higher cost.
- PPO plans let you see out-of-network providers, though staying in network is typically cheaper.
- SNPs (D-SNP, C-SNP, I-SNP) are Special Needs Plans limited to people who qualify — for example, dual eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid (D-SNP), a chronic condition like diabetes (C-SNP), or living in an institution such as a nursing home (I-SNP).
A few 2027 program facts to keep in mind
Whichever plan you consider, some numbers apply across the board in 2026. Part D out-of-pocket spending is capped at $2,100 in 2026 ($2,400 in 2027) for the year, the maximum Part D deductible any plan can charge is $615, and the old coverage gap ("donut hole") is gone — Part D now has three phases (deductible, initial coverage, catastrophic). If prescription costs spike early in the year, the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread them into monthly installments at no extra cost. Higher earners may pay IRMAA surcharges, which start above $109,000 in income for a single filer in 2026.
Dates to circle
The Annual Enrollment Period runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, 2026 — this is when most people join, switch or drop an MA plan for 2027. If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan on Jan. 1, 2027, you also get the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from Jan. 1 through March 31 to make one change (switch to another MA plan or go back to Original Medicare with a stand-alone PDP).
