MOBILE, Ala. — As the fall Medicare season opens, four Medicare Advantage plans sold in Mobile County this year will not be back in 2027, and 16 new plans are joining the local lineup. If you're on one of the plans that isn't renewing, you have a special window to switch — and you don't have to wait until December.
Key takeaways
- Four Medicare Advantage plans in Mobile County are not being offered in 2027, and members of those plans qualify for a Special Enrollment Period that runs through the end of February.
- Sixteen new Medicare Advantage plans are being added in Mobile County for 2027, and eight existing plans have been renamed.
- The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7; the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31.
- Read the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) your plan mailed in September — it lists exactly what's changing on your coverage for 2027.
Every fall, Medicare Advantage carriers file their coming-year plans with the federal government. When the 2027 filings are compared with 2026, Mobile County shows a mix of plans leaving, new plans arriving, some renamed, and many continuing largely as they are. Here's what that means for you.
What's happening in Mobile County for 2027
Mobile is in Mobile County, where Medicare Advantage availability is set. According to CMS's Medicare Advantage Landscape Source Files, comparing 2026 to 2027:
- 4 plans are leaving after 2026
- 16 plans are new for 2027
- 8 plans have been renamed (same plan, different name)
- 20 plans are changing on premium, deductible, plan type or name (the ANOC has the specifics)
- 55 plans are continuing
The full list appears in the table below on this page. Below, we walk through the changes that most directly affect current members.
The plans not returning in 2027
Four plans sold in Mobile County this year will not renew for 2027. If you're enrolled in any of these, your carrier is required to mail you a non-renewal notice, and you'll need to make a new choice:
- Blue Advantage Premier (PPO) — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama
- HealthSpring Preferred AL (HMO) — Blue Cross Blue Shield (HCSC)
- HealthSpring TotalCare (HMO D-SNP) — Blue Cross Blue Shield (HCSC)
- HealthSpring TotalCare Plus (HMO D-SNP) — Blue Cross Blue Shield (HCSC)
Note: HCSC is refiling plans that share the HealthSpring TotalCare and HealthSpring TotalCare Plus names for 2027, but they are technically new plan filings — check your mail to confirm what applies to you.
If your plan is on the leaving list, you have two paths:
1. Do nothing and use the Special Enrollment Period. When a plan is discontinued, CMS grants a Special Enrollment Period that runs from December 8 through the end of February. You can use it to join another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare and add a stand-alone Part D drug plan. 2. Pick a new plan during Annual Enrollment (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7). Your new coverage begins January 1.
If you take no action and your plan is not renewed, you'll generally be returned to Original Medicare on January 1 — which means you'd want a Part D drug plan lined up to avoid a coverage gap.
New plans arriving for 2027
Sixteen new Medicare Advantage plans are being added in Mobile County for 2027, from Aetna (CVS Health), Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, Blue Cross Blue Shield (HCSC), Devoted Health, UnitedHealthcare, and VIVA Medicare. The full names appear in the table on this page.
A "new" plan isn't automatically better or worse than a plan continuing from 2026 — it simply means the carrier filed it as a new offering. Compare it the same way you'd compare any option: doctors and hospitals in network, drug formulary, and total out-of-pocket costs across the year.
The eight renamed plans
Eight plans in Mobile County kept running but changed names for 2027. If your ID card or paperwork suddenly says something different, this is likely why:
- Blue Advantage Core (PPO) — was Blue Advantage Complete (PPO)
- HealthSpring Preferred Extra Savings (HMO) — was HealthSpring Preferred Full Savings (HMO)
- DEVOTED C-SNP CHOICE ENHANCED 009 AL (PPO C-SNP) — was DEVOTED C-SNP CHOICE PREMIUM 009 AL
- Humana Dual QMB Only (HMO D-SNP) — was Humana Gold Plus SNP-DE H4461-074 (HMO D-SNP)
- AARP Medicare Advantage Essentials from UHC AL-3 (HMO-POS) — was AARP Medicare Advantage from UHC AL-0003 (HMO-POS)
- UHC Dual Advantage AL-V2 (HMO-POS D-SNP) — was UHC Dual Complete AL-V002
- UHC Dual Complete AL-Q1 (HMO-POS D-SNP) — was UHC Dual Complete AL-D001
- UHC Dual Complete AL-Q2 (PPO D-SNP) — was UHC Dual Complete AL-D002
A rename by itself doesn't change your coverage, but the ANOC will tell you whether anything else changed too.
Plans that are "changing" — read your ANOC
Twenty plans in Mobile County are listed in CMS's file as changing on premium, deductible, plan type or name for 2027. The Landscape file flags that a change exists but doesn't spell it out — that's the job of the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) that plans mail to members each September. Read it side-by-side with your current Evidence of Coverage before December 7.
What every member should do this fall
1. Open your ANOC. It arrived by September 30. It compares this year's plan to next year's, line by line. 2. Check the drug list. Even if your plan is continuing, its formulary can shift. The Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 in 2026 and $2,400 in 2027; the Part D maximum deductible is $615 in 2026 and $700 in 2027. The optional Medicare Prescription Payment Plan continues to let you spread drug costs across the year. 3. Confirm your doctors and hospitals are in network for 2027. Provider directories update every year. 4. Compare at Medicare.gov using the Plan Finder tool with your ZIP code and medication list. 5. Get free local help. Alabama's State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) offers unbiased, no-cost counseling. You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), 24/7.

If your plan is not offered for 2027, you can choose another during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7) and you also get a Special Enrollment Period that runs through the end of February.
