TUCSON, Ariz. — If you have a Medicare Advantage plan in Tucson, this fall's mail is worth opening. Federal filings show 14 plans will not return in Pima County next year, 20 new plans are being added, and about a dozen more are being renamed. The Annual Enrollment Period — Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 — is when most people can act on those changes.
Key takeaways
- 14 Medicare Advantage plans are leaving Pima County after 2026, and every affected member will get an Annual Notice of Change from their carrier by late September.
- 20 new plans are joining the county for 2027, and Verda Health Plan of Arizona is entering as a new carrier.
- If your plan is not renewed, you get a Special Enrollment Period that runs through the end of February to pick a new plan or return to Original Medicare.
- The Annual Enrollment Period runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7; the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs Jan. 1 through March 31.
Tucson is in Pima County, where Medicare Advantage availability is set. For 2027, the county's lineup is being reshuffled by carriers you already know, plus one new to the area: Verda Health Plan of Arizona.
Plans leaving Pima County after 2026
Fourteen plans in the Tucson area will not be offered in 2027. If you're enrolled in any of them, your coverage ends Dec. 31, 2026, and you'll need to choose another plan or move back to Original Medicare.
The plans leaving are:
- Aetna Medicare Elite (PPO)
- Aetna Medicare Signature Advantage (HMO)
- Aetna Medicare Signature Extra (HMO)
- HealthSpring Preferred (HMO) — from Blue Cross Blue Shield (HCSC)
- Wellcare Arizona Complete Health Dual Align (HMO D-SNP)
- Wellcare Dual Liberty Sync (HMO D-SNP)
- Wellcare Giveback (HMO)
- Wellcare Simple Value (HMO)
- DEVOTED C-SNP PREMIUM 024 AZ (HMO C-SNP)
- DEVOTED CORE 016 AZ (HMO)
- eternalHealth + Fry's Medicare Advantage (HMO)
- eternalHealth Grand Give Back (HMO)
- SCAN Strive (HMO C-SNP)
- AARP Medicare Advantage CareFlex from UHC AZ-17 (HMO-POS)
Your carrier is required to send a non-renewal letter. Read it carefully — it explains your deadline and your choices.
Plans that are new for 2027
Twenty plans are being added in Pima County. That includes new options from carriers already here — Aetna (CVS Health), Alignment Health Plan, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Centene (WellCare), Devoted Health, eternalHealth, Humana, SCAN Health Plan and UnitedHealthcare — plus a new carrier, Verda Health Plan of Arizona, entering the market with Verda Noble Care (HMO) and Verda Noble Chronic Care (HMO C-SNP).
The full list of new plans appears in the table below, along with every other 2027 plan.
Renamed plans — same coverage, new label
Twelve plans are being renamed for 2027. If your plan's name looks a little different this fall, that doesn't automatically mean your coverage changed. Renamed plans include several from Alignment Health Plan (the "Heart & Diabetes" and "ONE + Walgreens" plans have new numbered names), HealthSpring Preferred (HMO) (formerly HealthSpring Alliance), HealthSpring Preferred Extra Savings (HMO), Wellpoint Premium Savings, two Humana Essentials Plus Giveback (PPO) plans, Humana Total Complete (HMO), and UHC Dual Complete AZ-YL (HMO-POS D-SNP).
Your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) will confirm whether anything besides the name has changed.
About 20 plans have changes on file
Beyond the plans leaving, joining or being renamed, CMS filings show around 20 Pima County plans have a change on premium, deductible, plan type or name for 2027. That doesn't tell you what changed or by how much — only that something is different from last year. Your ANOC, mailed by Sept. 30, is the document that spells out the specifics for your plan.
Fifty-six plans continue with no filed change to those fields.
What to do — step by step
1. Watch the mail in late September. Every Medicare Advantage member gets an ANOC. Pay special attention if your plan is on the "leaving" list — that letter is your notice. 2. Compare during AEP. Between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7, you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, join or drop a plan, or move back to Original Medicare (and add a Part D drug plan). Coverage starts Jan. 1. 3. If your plan is not renewed, you have extra time. A Special Enrollment Period for non-renewal runs through the end of February, giving you until Feb. 28, 2027 to pick a new Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare with a stand-alone Part D plan. 4. Use the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period if you need it. From Jan. 1 through March 31, anyone already in a Medicare Advantage plan can make one change (to another MA plan or back to Original Medicare). 5. Check your doctors, hospitals and drugs. Every year, before you enroll, confirm your providers are in-network and your prescriptions are on the plan's formulary.
A few program facts worth knowing
These apply to everyone with a Part D or Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage:
- The Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 in 2026.
- The Part D maximum deductible is $615.
- The old "donut hole" is gone as of 2025; Part D now has three phases.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread your drug costs across the year in monthly amounts, if you opt in.
- IRMAA surcharges (higher Part B and Part D premiums for higher-income enrollees) begin above $109,000 in income for a single filer in 2026.
