How to read the 2027 Santa Clarita lineup

Drug coverage: what to know for 2027

Most Medicare Advantage plans in Los Angeles County's 2027 lineup are MA-PDs — Medicare Advantage with Part D drug coverage built in. Keep in mind that Medicare rules generally don't let you pair a stand-alone Part D plan with an MA plan that already includes drugs.

A few program-wide Part D facts for 2027 apply no matter which plan you pick:

• The Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 for the year. Once you hit that, you pay $0 for covered drugs the rest of the year.
• The maximum Part D deductible any plan can charge is $615. Plans can charge less.
• The old "donut hole" coverage gap is gone (it was eliminated in 2025). Part D now has three phases.
• The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread your yearly drug costs into monthly bills at no extra charge, if you opt in.

Formularies (the list of covered drugs) differ by plan, so if you take specific medications, check them on the Medicare Plan Finder before you enroll.

Special Needs Plans in the mix

Of the 121 plans in the county, 47 are Special Needs Plans. Those aren't "extra" plans on top of the standard lineup — they're already counted in each carrier's totals. SNPs are only for people who qualify:

• C-SNPs for people with a qualifying chronic condition (like diabetes, heart disease, or a lung condition).
• D-SNPs for people who have both Medicare and Medi-Cal.
• I-SNPs for people who live in a nursing facility or need that level of care.

If you're not eligible for any of these, an SNP isn't an option, and you'd pick from the general HMO, HMO-POS, or PPO plans.

Dates to circle in Santa Clarita

• October 15 – December 7: Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period. Anyone with Medicare can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan. Coverage starts January 1.
