Key takeaways
- The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 – March 31, 2027, and lets you make one change if you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan.
- You can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or drop back to Original Medicare and add a stand-alone Part D drug plan.
- This window is not open to people who only have Original Medicare — that group uses the fall Annual Enrollment Period instead.
- For personalized help in Canyon County, contact Idaho SHIBA, Idaho's free State Health Insurance Assistance Program.
This is a different window from the fall Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7). It is narrower in what it lets you do, but for Nampa residents who feel stuck with a plan that isn't working, it can be a real relief.
Who this window is for
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is only for people who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1. If you have Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) and a stand-alone Part D drug plan, this window does not apply to you — your main chance to make changes was during the fall Annual Enrollment Period.
If you joined a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time when you aged into Medicare, you also have a separate trial right to switch back to Original Medicare within your first year. That is a different rule and worth asking about.
What you can change between January 1 and March 31
During this window, you are allowed to make one of the following changes:
- Switch from your current Medicare Advantage plan to a different Medicare Advantage plan.
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and go back to Original Medicare. If you do this, you can also join a stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.
The change takes effect the first day of the month after the plan gets your request. So a switch made in February would generally start March 1.
What you cannot do in this window
This period is more limited than the fall enrollment window. During January 1 – March 31 you cannot:
- Join a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time if you only have Original Medicare.
- Switch from one stand-alone Part D plan to another stand-alone Part D plan.
- Make more than one change. Once you use your switch, that is it until the next enrollment window.
Nampa and Canyon County: what's available
Nampa is in Canyon County, where Medicare Advantage plan availability is set at the county level by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Canyon County residents typically have a broad menu of Medicare Advantage and Part D options to choose from during any enrollment window. The exact list, along with each plan's benefits and costs, is available on the official Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov/plan-compare.
Because plans change every year — networks shift, drug formularies update, and cost structures move — the plan you had in 2026 may look different in 2027 even if you kept it. Check your plan's Annual Notice of Change and Medicare.gov's Plan Finder for the 2027 lineup.
2027 rules worth knowing before you switch
A few program-level facts apply no matter which plan you land on:
- The Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 in 2026. Once your covered drug spending hits that amount, you pay $0 for covered drugs the rest of the year.
- The Part D maximum deductible is $615 in 2026.
- The old coverage gap (the "donut hole") is gone as of 2025. Part D now has three phases: deductible, initial coverage, and catastrophic.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread your yearly drug costs across monthly payments instead of paying the full amount at the pharmacy counter. It is optional and free to opt into.
- IRMAA surcharges — extra amounts added to Part B and Part D premiums for higher-income enrollees — start above $109,000 in income for a single filer in 2026.
How to make a smart switch
Before you change plans, take a little time to line up the details:
1. List your prescriptions. Include the dose and how often you take each one. 2. List your doctors and preferred hospitals. In the Treasure Valley, that often includes providers tied to Saint Alphonsus, St. Luke's, or independent clinics. Check that they are in-network on any plan you consider. 3. Compare on medicare.gov. The Plan Finder lets you enter your drugs and pharmacies and see estimated yearly costs across every plan in Canyon County. 4. Ask for help if you want it. Idaho SHIBA counselors are trained volunteers who do not sell plans and can walk you through the comparison for free.
