Key takeaways
- The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31 and is only for people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
- You can switch to a different Advantage plan or drop your Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare, but you get only one change during this window.
- In 2026, Part D drug costs are capped at $2,100 out of pocket, and the maximum Part D deductible is $615; in 2027, the cap is $2,400 and the maximum deductible is $700 — figures worth checking as you compare coverage.

This window is narrower than the fall Annual Enrollment Period, and it comes with its own rules about who can use it and what they can do. Here is what Henderson-area readers need to know before the March 31 deadline.
Who this window is for
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (often shortened to MA OEP) is only for people who are already in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1. If you are on Original Medicare and want to move into an Advantage plan right now, this window is not for you — you would generally need to wait until the fall Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) or qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
If you enrolled in an Advantage plan during the fall and it isn't working — maybe your doctor isn't in network, or the drug coverage doesn't fit — this is your chance to correct that.
What you can change between January 1 and March 31
During this three-month window you can do one of the following:
- Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another Medicare Advantage plan.
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and go back to Original Medicare (Parts A and B). If you do this, you can also join a stand-alone Part D drug plan.
You get one change during this period. Once you make it, the window effectively closes for you until next year. Any change you make will take effect the first day of the following month.
What you cannot do in this window
The MA OEP is not a do-over for everything. During January through March, you generally cannot:
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time.
- Join a stand-alone Part D drug plan if you are staying on Original Medicare and were not already on one (unless you're leaving an Advantage plan).
- Switch from one stand-alone Part D plan to another if you're on Original Medicare.
Those moves are handled during the fall Annual Enrollment Period or through a Special Enrollment Period if you qualify (for example, after a move or a change in Medicaid status).
Henderson-area context
Henderson is in Henderson County, where Medicare plan availability is set at the county level. That means the Advantage and Part D plans offered to a Henderson resident are the same ones offered elsewhere in the county — not city-specific. When you shop or compare on medicare.gov, you'll enter your ZIP code, and the tool will show the plans available in Henderson County.
Plan lineups can change from year to year as carriers enter or leave the market, so if you're comparing this winter, make sure you're looking at the 2027 plan year.
2027 numbers worth knowing
A few program-level figures apply to everyone with Medicare drug coverage in 2027, whether through an Advantage plan or a stand-alone Part D plan:
- The Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,400 for the year. Once your covered drug costs hit that ceiling, you pay $0 for covered drugs the rest of the year.
- The maximum Part D deductible is $700 (individual plans may set a lower one).
- The old coverage gap, or "donut hole," was eliminated in 2025. Part D now has three phases instead of four.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread your drug costs into monthly payments over the year instead of paying large amounts at the pharmacy counter. It's optional, and you can opt in through your drug plan.
- IRMAA — the income-related surcharge on Part B and Part D — begins above $109,000 in income for a single filer in 2026.
How to make a change
You don't have to call your current plan to leave it. When you enroll in a new Advantage plan, or in a Part D plan after returning to Original Medicare, the switch is processed automatically. Good places to start:
- Medicare.gov — the Plan Finder tool lets you enter your drugs and pharmacy and compare coverage side by side.
- 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), open 24/7.
- Kentucky SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program), which offers free, unbiased one-on-one counseling for people on Medicare. In Kentucky, SHIP is administered through the Department for Aging and Independent Living.
