Lafayette Medicare Deadlines: What You Can Change and When
LAFAYETTE, La. — If you have Medicare here in Acadiana, the calendar matters as much as the coverage itself. Miss a window, and you may be stuck with a plan that no longer fits until the next one opens. Lafayette is in Lafayette Parish, where 49 Medicare Advantage plans were on the table for 2026 from 7 carriers — a wide field to consider, but only during the right window. The 2027 lineup is in each plan's ANOC and on Medicare.gov's Plan Finder.

Key takeaways
- The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs Jan. 1 – March 31 and lets you make one change if you're already in an Advantage plan.
- The Annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7) is the broader window when almost anyone with Medicare can switch.
- Lafayette Parish had 49 Medicare Advantage plans from 7 carriers for 2026, so timing your review matters. Check each plan's ANOC and Medicare.gov for the 2027 lineup.
- If you miss both windows, you generally wait until the next AEP unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
This guide walks through the enrollment periods that apply, what each one lets you do, and what happens if a date slips by.
The two windows most Lafayette readers ask about
There are two enrollment periods that come up over and over at kitchen tables in Lafayette:
- Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. This is the big one. You can join, drop, or switch a Medicare Advantage plan, and you can join, drop, or switch a stand-alone Part D drug plan. Changes take effect Jan. 1.
- Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP): Jan. 1 through March 31. This one is narrower. It's only for people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan on Jan. 1.
They are two different doors, and they open at different times of the year.
What the MA OEP actually lets you do
If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan on Jan. 1, the MA OEP gives you one shot between January and the end of March to:
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage), or
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and go back to Original Medicare — and, if you do that, pick up a stand-alone Part D drug plan.
A few things it does not let you do:
- If you have Original Medicare on Jan. 1, you cannot use the MA OEP to join a Medicare Advantage plan.
- You cannot use it to switch from one stand-alone Part D plan to another.
- You only get one change during this window. Once your new plan takes effect, that's it until the next AEP.
Why the timing matters more in a big market
Lafayette Parish's 2026 landscape included 49 Medicare Advantage plans across 7 carriers — the 2027 lineup will appear in each plan's ANOC and on Medicare.gov's Plan Finder. That's a lot to sort through. It also means that if the plan you picked in December turns out to be a poor fit — the pharmacy network isn't what you thought, or your doctor isn't in-network the way you expected — the MA OEP gives you a second look before the year gets away from you.
Also worth knowing: Louisiana has 10 stand-alone Part D plans for 2026, sold statewide, so anyone in Lafayette Parish with Original Medicare can join one of them; many shoppers still get drug coverage bundled inside a Medicare Advantage plan (an "MA-PD"). The 2027 lineup is in each plan's ANOC and on Medicare.gov's Plan Finder. If you're in an MA-PD, the MA OEP is the window that touches your drug coverage too, because it's baked into the plan.
What happens if you miss both windows
If Dec. 7 passes and March 31 passes and you haven't made a change, you're generally locked in for the rest of the year. The main exceptions are Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs), which can open if:
- You move out of your plan's service area (a move from Lafayette Parish to, say, a parish where your plan isn't offered can trigger one).
- You lose other coverage, like employer or union coverage.
- You qualify for Extra Help or Medicaid, or your status with those programs changes.
- You enter, live in, or leave a nursing facility.
- Your plan's contract with Medicare changes in certain ways.
SEPs come with their own clocks — often 60 days — so if life changes, don't sit on it.
How the program facts for 2026 and 2027 interact with these dates
A few program-level numbers are worth carrying into your review, no matter which window you use:
- Part D has a $2,100 out-of-pocket cap in 2026. Once you hit it, you pay $0 for covered drugs the rest of the year.
- The Part D maximum deductible is $615 for 2026 and $700 for 2027 (plans can set a lower one).
- The old coverage gap ("donut hole") is gone as of 2025 — Part D now has three phases.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread drug costs across the calendar year in monthly installments, if that helps your budget.
- IRMAA income-based surcharges for Part B and Part D start above $109,000 for a single filer in 2026.
None of these change the enrollment dates — but they're the kinds of things that make people want to revisit their coverage during a window.
