Key takeaways
- Between January 1 and March 31, people already on a Medicare Advantage plan get one chance to switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or move to Original Medicare, plus a Part D drug plan if needed.
- You can only make one change during this window, and after that you're locked into the plan for the rest of the year unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, such as moving or losing other coverage.
- This window is more limited than fall enrollment, so switching from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage or changing Part D plans while staying on Original Medicare generally has to wait for the Annual Enrollment Period from October 15 to December 7.
- Before deciding whether to switch, it helps to check if your doctors and prescriptions are still covered as expected, since provider networks and drug cost tiers can change each year.
Durant seniors get a second window to fix their Medicare Advantage choice
This period isn't as widely known as the fall enrollment window, but it exists for exactly this reason: sometimes the plan you picked in October looks different once you actually try to use it in January. Maybe your doctor isn't in the network after all. Maybe a prescription costs more than you expected. This is your built-in do-over.
What you can change between January 1 and March 31
According to CMS, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (often shortened to MA OEP) allows people who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan to do one of the following:
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage).
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare (Parts A and B).
- If you go back to Original Medicare, you can also join a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan.
You get one change during this window. Once you make it, that's your plan for the rest of the year unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (for example, if you move or lose other coverage).
What you cannot do during this window
The MA OEP is narrower than the fall Annual Enrollment Period. During January through March, you cannot:
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan (if you weren't already in one on January 1).
- Join a Part D drug plan if you're staying on Original Medicare and didn't have one before.
- Switch from one stand-alone Part D plan to another if you're on Original Medicare.
If any of those apply to you, you'll generally need to wait until the next Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) — unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
How to decide whether to make a change
The best time to review your plan is right after you've used it for the first time in the new year. Ask yourself a few honest questions:
1. Are my doctors and preferred hospitals still in-network? Networks can change from one plan year to the next. Durant is in Bryan County, and provider networks are set at the plan level, so check directly with your providers. 2. Are my prescriptions still covered the way I expected? Formularies (drug lists) change annually. If a medication moved to a higher cost tier, that shows up quickly. 3. Am I comfortable with the plan's rules? Referrals, prior authorizations, and out-of-network limits can catch people off guard in the first weeks of use. 4. Would Original Medicare plus a stand-alone drug plan fit my life better? Some people prefer the broader provider access of Original Medicare, even if it means adding a Part D plan.
If the answer to any of these raises a real concern, the MA OEP is your chance to act.
A few 2027 numbers worth knowing
Even if you don't change plans, these program-level figures apply to everyone with Medicare drug coverage in 2027:
- Part D out-of-pocket cap: $2,100 in 2026 and $2,400 in 2027. Once your out-of-pocket spending on covered drugs reaches this amount, you pay nothing for covered drugs the rest of the year.
- Part D maximum deductible: $615 in 2026 and $700 in 2027. Individual plans may set a lower deductible, but none can exceed this.
- The old coverage gap (“donut hole”) is gone as of 2025. Part D now has three phases instead of four.
- Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. This optional program lets you spread your drug costs into monthly payments across the year instead of paying large amounts at the pharmacy counter.
- IRMAA (the income-related surcharge on Part B and Part D) starts above $109,000 in income for a single filer in 2026.
Bryan County has multiple Medicare Advantage plans available, so if you decide to switch, there are options to compare. Plan availability is set at the county level, not the city level.
