Key takeaways
- The Annual Enrollment Period runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 — the main window to join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.
- The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs Jan. 1 through March 31 and gives one more chance to change or leave an MA plan.
- Missing your Initial Enrollment Period around your 65th birthday can create lifelong Part B and Part D late-enrollment penalties.
- The Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 in 2026 and $2,400 in 2027. The maximum Part D deductible is $615 in 2026 and $700 in 2027.
EDMOND, Okla. — Choosing between Original Medicare paired with a Medigap policy and a Medicare Advantage plan is a big decision, but for most Edmond residents the harder part is timing. Miss the wrong window and you may wait months to make a change — or pay more than you expected for years.
Edmond sits in Oklahoma County, where 52 Medicare Advantage plans are on offer for 2027 through 8 different carriers. That is a lot to sort through, and the calendar is what tells you when you can actually act.
The one window almost every Edmond reader needs to know
The Annual Enrollment Period — Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 — is the big one. During these weeks you can:
- Join a Medicare Advantage plan, switch to a different one, or drop it and return to Original Medicare.
- Join, switch, or drop a Part D drug plan.
Whatever you choose during this window takes effect Jan. 1. If Dec. 7 passes and you did nothing, in most cases you are locked into your current coverage for the year.
One local note: Oklahoma has 9 stand-alone Part D plans for 2027, sold statewide, so Edmond residents with Original Medicare can choose from that list. Most Medicare Advantage plans in the county also include Part D built in, so the choice of how you get drug coverage is closely tied to your bigger Medicare decision.
The second-chance window: Jan. 1 – March 31
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs Jan. 1 through March 31. It is narrower than the fall window. During this period, if you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can:
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan, or
- Drop Medicare Advantage and go back to Original Medicare (and add a Part D plan).
You cannot use this window to switch from Original Medicare into a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time, and you cannot use it to join a stand-alone Part D plan if you have Original Medicare. So if you liked your fall choice, ignore it. If January hits and you realize your plan is not the right fit, this is your reset.
When you first turn 65: the Initial Enrollment Period
Your Initial Enrollment Period is a seven-month window: the three months before the month you turn 65, your birthday month, and the three months after. This is when most Edmond residents first sign up for Part A and Part B.
Miss it, and two things can happen:
- Part B late penalty. For each full 12-month period you could have had Part B but didn't, your monthly premium can go up 10% — and that increase generally lasts as long as you have Part B.
- Part D late penalty. If you go 63 days or more without creditable drug coverage after you were first eligible, a small penalty gets added to your Part D premium for as long as you have Part D.
There are exceptions — mainly if you had qualifying coverage through a job. But do not assume you qualify; check before your window closes.
Medigap has its own clock
If you are leaning toward Original Medicare plus a Medigap policy, the timing rules are different — and stricter than many people realize.
Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a one-time, six-month window that starts the month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During those six months, insurers in Oklahoma must sell you any Medigap policy they offer at their standard rate, regardless of your health history.
After that window closes, insurers can generally use medical underwriting — meaning they can charge more, or decline to sell you a policy, based on your health. This is why people who choose Medicare Advantage first sometimes find it hard to switch back to Original Medicare with a Medigap plan later.
Special Enrollment Periods: when life changes the rules
Life does not always line up with Medicare's calendar. Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) can open outside the standard windows if:
- You move out of your plan's service area (a move to or from Edmond can qualify).
- You lose employer or union coverage.
- You become eligible for Extra Help or Medicaid.
- Your plan leaves the market or changes its contract.
If any of these apply to you, call 1-800-MEDICARE or your local SHIP before you assume you have to wait until fall.
A quick word on 2027 dollars
Two program-level figures worth writing down for 2027:
- Part D out-of-pocket spending is capped at $2,400 (up from $2,100 in 2026).
- The Part D deductible cannot exceed $700 (up from $615 in 2026).
The old "donut hole" coverage gap has been eliminated as of 2025, so Part D now has three phases instead of four. Medicare also offers an optional Medicare Prescription Payment Plan that lets you spread your drug costs across the year in monthly installments instead of paying all at once at the pharmacy counter.
Higher-income enrollees should also be aware of IRMAA — an income-related surcharge on Part B and Part D premiums that starts above $109,000 for a single filer in 2026.
