Austin, Texas — It is fall 2026, and the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period is open. From now through December 7, 2026, people on Medicare can switch, drop or join a Medicare Advantage plan for coverage that begins January 1, 2027. If you do nothing, your current plan simply renews next year — assuming it is still offered — with whatever changes are spelled out in its Annual Notice of Change.
Austin sits in Travis County, where Medicare Advantage choices are set at the county level. For 2027, Travis County residents will have 56 Medicare Advantage plans from 8 carriers to pick from, according to the CMS Medicare Advantage Landscape file for the 2027 plan year. That is a slight drop from the 60 plans on offer in 2026. Along the way, 15 plans are not returning, 11 are new, and the rest are renewing — some with changes you will want to read before December 7.
What is on offer in Travis County for 2027
Of the 56 Medicare Advantage plans available in Travis County for 2027, 22 are HMOs, 13 are HMO-POS plans, and 21 are PPOs. All of them include Part D drug coverage.
Special Needs Plans (SNPs) are a big share of the lineup. For 2027, Travis County has 14 Dual-Eligible SNPs (for people with both Medicare and Medicaid), 8 Chronic Condition SNPs (for conditions like diabetes, heart disease or kidney disease), and 6 Institutional SNPs (for people who live in a nursing home or need that level of care). You can only enroll in an SNP if you meet its eligibility rules.
The eight carriers offering Medicare Advantage plans in Travis County for 2027, in alphabetical order, are Aetna (CVS Health), Centene (WellCare), Devoted Health, Elevance Health (Anthem), Humana, Provider Partners Health Plans, Texas Independence Health Plan, and UnitedHealthcare. Provider Partners Health Plans is new to the county roster this year. The full list of plans by carrier appears in the table below.
What is new, what is leaving
Three things are worth knowing before you compare:
- 11 plans are new for 2027. New plans mean a different network, a different drug list and different cost-sharing — do not assume they look like last year's menu.
- 15 plans are not returning for 2027. If yours is one of them, you will get a non-renewal notice from your plan and a Special Enrollment Period to pick something else.
- Some plans are renewing with changes. The Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) your plan mailed in September spells out exactly what is different from your 2026 coverage — premium, deductible, copays, drug tier changes, network changes, extra benefits.
A step-by-step way to compare your options
The best order is the one that rules plans out fastest. Try this:
1. Read your Annual Notice of Change first. Before you shop, know what your current plan is doing in 2027. If the changes work for you and your doctors are still in network, you may not need to switch.
2. Check your doctors and hospitals. Pull up each plan's provider directory on the carrier's website, or call the plan. Confirm the specific doctors, clinics and hospitals you use are in-network for 2027. Networks change every year.
3. Enter your prescriptions in the Medicare Plan Finder. Go to medicare.gov/plan-compare, type in each drug and dose, and the tool will show which plans cover them, what tier they are on and what you would pay. The Plan Finder is the official comparison tool and it uses current plan data.
4. Check your pharmacy. The same plan can have very different costs at a "preferred" pharmacy versus a "standard" one. If you are loyal to a particular pharmacy, filter for it.
5. Look at total yearly cost, not just the premium. Add premium, deductible and the estimated out-of-pocket shown in the Plan Finder. A plan with a low premium can cost more overall if your drugs or doctor visits land in higher tiers.
6. Check the extras you will actually use. Dental, vision, hearing, OTC allowances and transportation vary a lot by plan. A benefit you never use is not a benefit.
7. Confirm the plan type fits how you use care. HMOs usually require you to stay in network and get referrals. HMO-POS plans allow some out-of-network use. PPOs give more flexibility out of network, usually at a higher cost.
Two 2027 figures to keep in mind
Part D drug coverage has two program-level numbers that are confirmed for 2027 and apply to every Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage sold here:
- The Part D out-of-pocket cap rises to $2,400 in 2027, up from $2,100 in 2026. Once your out-of-pocket spending on covered drugs hits that cap, you pay $0 for covered drugs the rest of the year.
- The Part D maximum deductible is $700 in 2027, up from $615 in 2026. Plans can set a lower deductible, but not higher.
The 2027 Part B standard premium and deductible, and the 2027 IRMAA income brackets, are set by CMS and are typically announced in the fall — usually in November. Watch medicare.gov for those.
Where to get help
The Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov/plan-compare is the official place to compare plans with your own drugs and pharmacy. You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For the fine print on any plan you are considering, ask the plan for its Evidence of Coverage, Summary of Benefits and current provider and pharmacy directories.
By the numbers
Medicare Part B premium, 2006–2026
The standard monthly Part B premium has climbed from $88.50 in 2006 to $202.90 in 2026. Hover any point for that year’s premium.
