CHESAPEAKE, Va. — As Medicare's fall enrollment window runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, some Chesapeake residents will find that their Medicare Advantage plan looks different next year — or is not being offered at all. According to CMS's 2027 Medicare Advantage Landscape file, three plans available in Chesapeake city in 2026 will not return in 2027, six new plans are entering, and 16 are keeping the same underlying plan but changing names.
Key takeaways
- Three Medicare Advantage plans sold in Chesapeake in 2026 will not be offered in 2027, and members of those plans get a Special Enrollment Period that runs through Feb. 28, 2027.
- Six new Medicare Advantage plans are entering Chesapeake for 2027, and 16 existing plans have been renamed even though the underlying plan continues.
- The Annual Enrollment Period runs Oct. 15–Dec. 7, and the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs Jan. 1–March 31 for people already in an Advantage plan.
- Read your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) — it lists exactly what is changing on your plan for 2027.
If you're on one of the plans that is going away, you have extra time to switch — but you have to act.
What's changing in Chesapeake for 2027
Chesapeake is in Chesapeake city, and Medicare plan availability is set at the county (or independent city) level. Based on the CMS Landscape files comparing 2026 to 2027, here's what the numbers show for Chesapeake city:
- 3 plans leaving after 2026
- 6 new plans for 2027
- 16 plans renamed (same plan, new name)
- 29 plans changing on at least one of premium, deductible, plan type or name
- 48 plans continuing without those changes
The table below on this page lists every plan available locally. Your own plan's specifics — premium, deductible, drug list, provider network — are in your Annual Notice of Change, which plans mail in late September.
The three plans not returning in 2027
If you're enrolled in one of these three Chesapeake-area plans in 2026, it will not be offered in 2027:
- Anthem Full Dual Advantage 2 (HMO D-SNP) — Elevance Health (Anthem)
- AARP Medicare Advantage Access from UHC VA-20 (PPO) — UnitedHealthcare
- UHC Dual Complete VA-Y3 (HMO-POS D-SNP) — UnitedHealthcare
You should get a non-renewal letter from your plan explaining this. If you do nothing, you'll generally return to Original Medicare on Jan. 1, 2027 — which means you'll also lose the Part D drug coverage that came with your Advantage plan unless you enroll in a standalone drug plan or a new Advantage plan.
New plans arriving for 2027
CMS lists six new Medicare Advantage plans becoming available in Chesapeake city for 2027:
- Humana DaVita Kidney Care (PPO C-SNP)
- Humana DaVita Kidney Care (PPO C-SNP)
- Humana Together in Health (PPO I-SNP)
- HumanaChoice H7617-125 (PPO)
- AARP Medicare Advantage Direct Plus from UHC VA-26 (HMO-POS)
- AARP Medicare Advantage Extras from UHC VA-30 (HMO-POS)
A C-SNP is a Chronic Condition Special Needs Plan (for people with specific conditions like kidney disease). An I-SNP is an Institutional Special Needs Plan (for people who live in a nursing home or need that level of care). These plans have eligibility rules — not everyone can enroll.
Renamed plans — same plan, new label
Sixteen plans in Chesapeake are keeping their contract but going by a different name in 2027. A few examples: Aetna Medicare Enhanced (PPO) was Aetna Medicare Enhanced Plus (PPO); Anthem Dual Advantage Plus (HMO D-SNP) was Anthem Dual Advantage (HMO D-SNP); Humana Total Complete (HMO) is the new name for what were three separate Humana Gold Plus and Humana Total Complete plans; and AARP Medicare Advantage Essentials from UHC VA-8 (HMO-POS) was AARP Medicare Advantage from UHC VA-0008 (HMO-POS). The full renamed list — 16 in total — is in the table on this page.
If your plan was renamed, your coverage generally continues, but the ANOC will spell out any changes to costs or benefits for 2027.
What a member should do
1. Read your Annual Notice of Change. It arrives by late September and lists what is changing on your specific plan for 2027 — premium, deductible, copays, drug list, and network. 2. If your plan is leaving, use the Special Enrollment Period. When CMS or your plan does not renew, you qualify for an SEP that runs from Dec. 8, 2026 through the end of February 2027 to pick a new Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare with a Part D plan. 3. During AEP (Oct. 15–Dec. 7), anyone with Medicare can join, switch or drop an Advantage or Part D plan. Changes take effect Jan. 1. 4. Jan. 1–March 31 is Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment. If you're already in an Advantage plan on Jan. 1, you get one chance to switch to another Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare. 5. Check the program-level basics that apply everywhere: Part D has a $2,100 out-of-pocket cap in 2026 and $2,400 in 2027; the maximum deductible is $615 in 2026 and $700 in 2027. The coverage gap ("donut hole") no longer exists — Part D now has three phases. And the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread drug costs across the year at no extra charge if that helps your budget.
