This guide walks through what those carriers are, what kinds of plans they offer, and how to read the full plan list for Newport News without getting lost in the alphabet soup. The table below lists every plan by carrier, its plan type, and whether it includes drug coverage.
How the 2027 lineup looks in Newport News
Medicare Advantage availability is set at the county level. Newport News is in Newport News City, and CMS's 2027 Medicare Advantage Landscape shows 47 plans available there, offered by six carriers:
- Aetna (CVS Health): 1 plan
- Elevance Health (Anthem): 10 plans
- Humana: 29 plans
- Lifeworks Advantage: 2 plans
- Sentara Medicare: 2 plans
- UnitedHealthcare: 14 plans
Every one of those 47 plans includes Part D prescription drug coverage. There are no stand-alone Part D plans listed separately for this area in the 2027 landscape file, so drug coverage for Medicare Advantage enrollees here comes bundled into the plan itself.
The plan types you'll see, in plain English
The plan roster mixes several plan types. Knowing what each label means helps you skim the table without feeling overwhelmed:
- HMO (Health Maintenance Organization): usually asks you to use a network of doctors and hospitals and pick a primary care doctor. Newport News has 19 HMO plans available.
- HMO-POS (Point of Service): an HMO with some out-of-network flexibility for certain services. There are 17 in the area.
- PPO (Preferred Provider Organization): typically lets you go out of network, often at a higher cost share. There are 21 in the area.
- PFFS (Private Fee-for-Service): pays providers a set amount; providers decide visit by visit whether to accept it. There is 1 PFFS plan available.
You'll also see the letters SNP next to some plans in the table. A Special Needs Plan is limited to people who fit a specific profile — for example, D-SNPs are for people with both Medicare and Medicaid, C-SNPs are for people with certain chronic conditions like diabetes or chronic kidney disease, and I-SNPs are for people living in long-term care settings. Of the 58 plans in Newport News City, 27 are SNPs.
Carrier by carrier: what to notice
Here is a quick tour of the six carriers on the table. The full plan names, types, and drug coverage flags are in the roster on this page.
- Aetna (CVS Health) offers one plan in the area, a D-SNP built for people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid.
- Elevance Health (Anthem) offers 10 plans, a mix of HMO, HMO-POS and PPO designs, including several Dual-eligible SNPs and two chronic-condition SNPs. Anthem also lists a PPO oriented to veterans.
- Humana has the largest local footprint with 29 plans, spanning HMO, HMO-POS, PPO and PFFS, plus SNPs for dual-eligible members, certain chronic conditions, and an institutional plan.
- Lifeworks Advantage offers two plans (Premier Care and Senior Care), both Institutional SNPs.
- Sentara Medicare offers two plans, both HMO D-SNPs.
- UnitedHealthcare offers 14 plans under the AARP Medicare Advantage and UHC Dual/Complete Care names, all HMO-POS or PPO designs, including several D-SNPs.
None of that says one carrier or plan is a better fit for you — that depends on your doctors, your medications, and your budget. The point of the table is to show what is available so you can compare on the details that matter.
How to actually pick
A few things worth checking before Dec. 7, using medicare.gov's Plan Finder or the plan's own materials:
- Your doctors and hospitals. Networks vary by plan, even inside the same carrier. Confirm each provider you use is in-network for the plan you're considering.
- Your prescriptions. Enter each drug into the Plan Finder. Formularies (drug lists), tiers and pharmacy networks are different from plan to plan.
- Your total yearly cost. Look at the premium, the deductible, and the copays for services you actually use, not just the monthly price.
- Part D protections that apply everywhere in 2027. The Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 for 2026 and $2,400 for 2027; the maximum Part D deductible is $615 for 2026 and $700 for 2027; and the old coverage gap ("donut hole") is gone as of 2025. The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread drug costs across the year in monthly installments if you opt in.
- Special Needs Plan eligibility. If a plan in the table is marked D-SNP, C-SNP or I-SNP, you must meet that specific eligibility to enroll.
If your income is above $109,000 as a single filer in 2026, an IRMAA surcharge may apply to your Part B and Part D premiums. That is a Medicare-wide rule, not something a particular plan controls.
Key dates to keep in mind
- Oct. 15 – Dec. 7: Annual Enrollment Period. You can join, switch or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan for a Jan. 1 start.
- Jan. 1 – March 31: Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment. If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to another one or return to Original Medicare.
- Other times of year, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you move, lose other coverage, or have certain life events.
