Virginia Beach, Va. — As the fall Medicare season gets underway, three Medicare Advantage plans sold in Virginia Beach city will not return in 2027, six new plans are joining the local lineup, and 16 more are keeping their coverage but changing names. If you are enrolled in one of the plans on the way out, you have a special window to switch — and a clear next step to take.
Key takeaways
- Three Medicare Advantage plans available in Virginia Beach in 2026 will not be offered in 2027, and members of those plans get a Special Enrollment Period that runs through the end of February.
- Six new Medicare Advantage plans are joining the Virginia Beach lineup for 2027, and 16 continuing plans are being renamed.
- The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7; the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31.
- Watch your mail for the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) from your current plan — it spells out exactly what is changing for 2027.
The numbers come from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Landscape Source Files, which compare the 2026 and 2027 plan years for Virginia Beach city, the county-level area that includes Virginia Beach.
Plans leaving Virginia Beach after 2026
Three Medicare Advantage plans in the Virginia Beach city area are being discontinued at the end of 2026:
- Anthem Full Dual Advantage 2 (HMO D-SNP), from Elevance Health (Anthem)
- AARP Medicare Advantage Access from UHC VA-20 (PPO), from UnitedHealthcare
- UHC Dual Complete VA-Y3 (HMO-POS D-SNP), from UnitedHealthcare
If you are in one of these plans, your carrier is required to send you a non-renewal notice. You will not automatically be moved to another plan. You need to pick a new plan yourself, or you will drop back to Original Medicare (Parts A and B) on January 1, 2027, without a drug plan.
New plans coming for 2027
Six plans are new to the Virginia Beach city lineup for 2027:
- Humana DaVita Kidney Care (PPO C-SNP)
- Humana DaVita Kidney Care (PPO C-SNP)
- Humana Together in Health (PPO I-SNP)
- HumanaChoice H7617-125 (PPO)
- AARP Medicare Advantage Direct Plus from UHC VA-26 (HMO-POS), from UnitedHealthcare
- AARP Medicare Advantage Extras from UHC VA-30 (HMO-POS), from UnitedHealthcare
Some of these are Special Needs Plans (SNPs) — the "C-SNP" and "I-SNP" labels mean they are limited to people with certain chronic conditions or living in an institutional setting. If a plan looks interesting, check the eligibility rules before you apply.
Renamed plans — same plan, new name
Sixteen plans in Virginia Beach are continuing into 2027 under a new name. A rename does not necessarily mean the coverage is identical, only that CMS shows the same plan record with a different label. Renamed plans include several from Aetna, Anthem, Humana and UnitedHealthcare — for example, Aetna Medicare Enhanced (PPO) (was Aetna Medicare Enhanced Plus), Anthem Dual Advantage Plus (HMO D-SNP) (was Anthem Dual Advantage), and AARP Medicare Advantage Essentials from UHC VA-8 (HMO-POS) (was AARP Medicare Advantage from UHC VA-0008). The full list is in the table below.
If your plan shows up under a new name in your fall mail, don't panic — but do read the ANOC to see what, if anything, is different.
Other plans changing for 2027
Beyond the ones leaving, arriving or being renamed, CMS shows changes on 29 plans in Virginia Beach city — differences year over year in premium, deductible, plan type or name. We can't tell you here what changed or by how much; the ANOC your plan mails out (usually by the end of September) is the document that spells that out. Read it side-by-side with your current plan's Summary of Benefits before you decide to stay.
Another 48 plans continue into 2027 largely as they were.
What to do if your plan is leaving
If your plan is on the discontinued list above, you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that runs through February 28, 2027. During that window you can:
- Join a different Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage), or
- Return to Original Medicare and add a stand-alone Part D drug plan.
You do not have to wait for the SEP — you can also make your switch during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7, 2026), and for most people that is the cleanest way to have new coverage in place on January 1.
If you decide to go back to Original Medicare, you may also want to look at a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policy. In Virginia, guaranteed-issue rights can apply when your Medicare Advantage plan leaves the market — call your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), the Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP), to walk through your rights before you buy.
A few program facts to keep in mind
As you compare drug coverage for 2027, some Part D figures are set and others are not. CMS publishes the 2027 Part B premium and deductible, and the IRMAA income brackets, later this fall:
- The Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 in 2026.
- The maximum Part D deductible is $615.
- The old coverage gap (the "donut hole") is gone as of 2025 — there are now three phases.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread drug costs out in monthly payments.
- IRMAA surcharges start above $109,000 in income for a single filer in 2026.
