Medicare Part D
Medicare in Waldorf: two paths for 2027
If you're turning 65 in Waldorf, or helping a parent sort through the mail piling up on the kitchen table, you've probably noticed Medicare seems to come in two very different flavors. That's not your imagination. Once you have Medicare Part A and Part B, you generally choose between two paths: Original Medicare paired with a Medigap policy, or a Medicare Advantage plan.

Both are legitimate. Both are regulated by the federal government. But they work very differently, and the choice shapes how you'll see doctors, fill prescriptions, and pay bills for years to come.
Here's a plain-language look at how the two paths compare — and where to get unbiased help right here in Charles County.
Path 1: Original Medicare + a Medigap policy
Original Medicare is the traditional, federally run program. Part A covers hospital stays; Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, and many preventive services. You can see any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare — no network, no referrals.
The trade-off: Original Medicare has deductibles and coinsurance, and there's no yearly cap on what you might owe out of pocket. That's where Medigap (also called Medicare Supplement Insurance) comes in. Medigap is a private policy that fills in some of those cost-sharing gaps. Medigap plans are standardized by letter (Plan G, Plan N, and so on), so a Plan G from one company covers the same things as a Plan G from another.
Original Medicare doesn't include prescription drug coverage, so most people on this path also enroll in a stand-alone Part D drug plan.
Path 2: Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Medicare Advantage is Medicare's private-plan option. You still have Medicare, but you get your Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurance company that contracts with the federal government. Most Medicare Advantage plans also include Part D drug coverage bundled in, and many offer extras Original Medicare doesn't, such as routine dental, vision, or hearing benefits.
The trade-offs are different here. Medicare Advantage plans typically use networks of doctors and hospitals, may require referrals for specialists, and can require prior authorization for certain services. On the other hand, they have a yearly cap on out-of-pocket medical costs, which Original Medicare alone doesn't.
What's available in the Waldorf area
Plan availability in Medicare is set at the county level, not the city. Waldorf is in Charles County, so the list of Medicare Advantage plans and stand-alone Part D drug plans available to a Waldorf resident is the same list available to a neighbor in La Plata or Indian Head.
You can see the exact number of plans, carriers, and drug plans serving Charles County by using the Plan Finder tool at medicare.gov and entering your ZIP code. That tool lets you compare based on your own doctors and prescriptions — which matters far more than any general ranking.
2026 and 2027 numbers worth knowing
A few program-wide figures apply no matter which path you choose:
- Part D out-of-pocket cap: $2,100 in 2026 and $2,400 in 2027. Once your covered drug spending reaches that limit, you pay nothing for covered drugs the rest of the year.
- Part D maximum deductible: $615 in 2026 and $700 in 2027 (some plans set it lower).
- The coverage gap ("donut hole") is gone as of 2025. Part D now has three phases instead of four.
- Medicare Prescription Payment Plan: an optional program that lets you spread your drug costs across monthly payments instead of paying at the pharmacy counter.
- IRMAA: higher-income beneficiaries pay extra for Part B and Part D. In 2026, the surcharge kicks in above $109,000 for single filers (higher for joint).
Key dates to circle
- October 15 – December 7, 2026: Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period. This is when anyone with Medicare can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan for 2027.
- January 1 – March 31: Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment. If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you get one chance to switch to a different one or return to Original Medicare (and pick up a Part D plan).
One important note about Medigap: the strongest federal right to buy a Medigap policy — without medical underwriting — is generally during your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts when you're 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. Missing that window can make it harder to switch from Medicare Advantage to Medigap later, depending on your health. It's worth thinking through carefully at the start.
