Medicare Supplement
Bakersfield readers: pairing Medigap with Part D basics
Bakersfield, Calif. — If you have Original Medicare and you're weighing a Medicare Supplement policy, the first thing worth knowing is that the coverage itself is standardized by the federal government. In Bakersfield, as everywhere else in California, a Medigap plan sold under a given letter has the same core benefits no matter which insurance company sells it. What changes from company to company is the price, the customer service, and — in California — some extra state rules that shape when you can switch.

- People newly eligible for Medicare today can buy Medigap Plans A, B, D, G, G-High Deductible, K, L, M, or N; Plans C and F are closed to anyone first eligible on or after January 1, 2020.
- Medigap works only with Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and does not include drug coverage, so most people pair it with a stand-alone Part D plan.
- California does not publish a single insurer list for this page, so use Medicare.gov's Medigap policy search, the California Department of Insurance rate guide, or the state's free SHIP counselors to compare companies.
- In 2026, Part D has a $2,100 out-of-pocket cap and a maximum $615 deductible, and the old coverage gap is gone.
What Medigap is — and what it is not
Medigap is private insurance that helps pay some of the out-of-pocket costs Original Medicare leaves behind, such as coinsurance and copays. It only works with Original Medicare. If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you cannot use a Medigap policy at the same time.
Medigap also does not include prescription drug coverage. That's why most people who choose Medigap also enroll in a stand-alone Part D drug plan.
The standardized letters you can buy in California
Federal law standardizes Medigap plans by letter. (Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin use their own systems; California uses the federal letters.) If you are newly eligible for Medicare today, the letters available to you are:
- A, B, D, G, G-High Deductible, K, L, M, and N
Plans C and F are still in force for people who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, but they are closed to anyone becoming eligible after that date.
Because the letters are standardized, a Plan G from one company covers the same benefits as a Plan G from another company. That's an important idea when you shop: you are really comparing price and service on the same product, not different benefit designs.
How Medigap pairs with Part D in 2026
If you go the Medigap route, you'll typically also pick a stand-alone Part D plan for prescriptions. A few 2026 numbers to keep in mind:
- Part D has a $2,100 out-of-pocket cap for covered drugs.
- The Part D deductible can be no higher than $615.
- The old "donut hole" coverage gap is gone; Part D now has three phases.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread your drug costs across the year in monthly installments if you choose.
- IRMAA surcharges for higher-income enrollees start above $109,000 in income for a single filer in 2026.
The Annual Enrollment Period for Part D runs October 15 through December 7 each year.
California rules that shape the choice
Federal law gives you a six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period that starts the month your Part B coverage begins and you are 65 or older. During that window, insurers must sell you any Medigap plan they offer, at their published rate, regardless of your health.
California adds protections beyond the federal floor, including rules that in some situations let people change Medigap policies around their birthday. Because these state rights are specific and change over time, don't rely on a general article for the details — confirm your situation with the California Department of Insurance or your local SHIP (HICAP) counselor before you switch.
Rating method also matters in California. Insurers can price Medigap by age, and how they do it affects how your premium changes over time. The state rate guide explains the differences.
