Medicare Supplement
Medigap in Shreveport: the plan letters you can still buy in Louisiana
If you live in Shreveport and are pairing Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement policy, the first thing to know is that Medigap is standardized by the federal government. That means a Plan G sold in Caddo Parish covers the same benefits as a Plan G sold anywhere else in Louisiana. What changes is who sells it, how they price it, and which plan letters you are still allowed to buy.

- People newly eligible for Medicare today can buy Medigap Plans A, B, D, G, G-HD, K, L, M, or N in Louisiana; Plans C and F are closed to anyone who became eligible on or after January 1, 2020.
- Medigap only works with Original Medicare (Parts A and B) — it does not include drug coverage, so most people pair it with a stand-alone Part D plan.
- Your strongest window to buy any Medigap plan without health questions is your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts when you are 65 and enrolled in Part B.
- For personal help in Shreveport, the Louisiana SHIIP counselors and the Louisiana Department of Insurance can walk you through your rights at no cost.
How Medigap works alongside Original Medicare
Medigap is private insurance that pays some of the out-of-pocket costs Original Medicare leaves behind — things like the Part A hospital deductible, coinsurance days, and, depending on the letter, the Part B deductible or coinsurance. You keep paying your Part B premium to Medicare, and you pay a separate premium to the Medigap insurer.
You cannot use a Medigap policy with a Medicare Advantage plan. It only works with Original Medicare. That is the trade a lot of Shreveport shoppers weigh: broader access to any provider who accepts Medicare, versus the network-based structure of an Advantage plan.
The standardized plan letters available in Louisiana
Federal law sets the benefits inside each Medigap letter. In Louisiana, people newly eligible for Medicare today can buy:
- Plan A, Plan B, Plan D
- Plan G and Plan G High-Deductible (G-HD)
- Plan K and Plan L (which use cost-sharing percentages)
- Plan M
- Plan N
Plans C and F remain available only to people who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. If you were eligible before that date and never enrolled, you may still be able to buy one.
A quick note: Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin standardize Medigap differently. Louisiana follows the federal letters, so what you read on Medicare.gov about Plan G or Plan N applies here.
Why "same letter, different insurer" matters
Because the benefits inside each letter are identical, a Plan G from one carrier covers the same medical costs as a Plan G from another. What differs between insurers is the premium, how they raise premiums over time, household discounts, underwriting questions if you apply outside your open enrollment window, and customer service.
The table below lists every insurer selling Medigap in Louisiana and which letters each one offers. You will see familiar names such as AARP - UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company, Aetna Health Insurance Company, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana, Humana (Humana Insurance Company), Mutual of Omaha (Omaha Insurance Company), and State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, along with more specialized carriers like Bankers Fidelity Assurance Company, Medico Life and Health Insurance Company, and Philadelphia American Life Insurance Company. Not every carrier sells every letter — for example, some offer only A, F, G, and N, while others include high-deductible versions of F or G.
We do not rank these carriers or quote prices. For current rates, use the Medicare.gov Medigap policy search or the rate guide published by the Louisiana Department of Insurance.
Pairing Medigap with Part D
Medigap policies sold today do not include prescription drug coverage. If you want drug coverage, you enroll separately in a stand-alone Medicare Part D plan.
A few 2026 Part D facts worth knowing before you shop:
- The annual out-of-pocket cap for Part D is $2,100 in 2026.
- The Part D maximum deductible is $615.
- The old coverage gap ("donut hole") is gone as of 2025; Part D now has three phases.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread your drug costs across the year in monthly installments if you choose.
- IRMAA surcharges — higher Part B and Part D premiums for higher-income filers — begin above $109,000 in income for a single filer in 2026.
You can change your Part D plan each year during the Annual Enrollment Period, October 15 through December 7.
The state rules that shape your choice
The strongest protection you have is federal: during your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which begins the month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B, insurers must sell you any Medigap plan they offer at their best available rate, regardless of your health.
Outside that window, insurers in Louisiana can generally use medical underwriting — meaning they can ask health questions and decide whether to accept you or charge more — unless you qualify for a federal guaranteed-issue right (for example, if a group retiree plan ends or if you are within a trial-right period after trying Medicare Advantage).
Some states have added extra rights, like "birthday rules" that let you switch Medigap plans each year without underwriting. Louisiana's rules can change, so before you assume you can switch, confirm your current rights with the Louisiana Department of Insurance or a SHIIP counselor.
Where to get personal help in Shreveport
Shreveport is in Caddo Parish, and the same statewide Medigap rules apply here as in the rest of Louisiana. Because Medigap decisions are long-term — switching later may require underwriting — it is worth talking to someone before you sign.
- Medicare.gov has the official Medigap policy search and plan-benefit charts.
- 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) can answer general questions 24/7.
