Key takeaways

  • People newly eligible for Medicare can buy Plans A, B, D, G, G-HD, K, L, M or N; Plans C and F are only for people eligible before January 1, 2020.
  • Plans G and N pay after you meet the Part B deductible, and that deductible resets every January — so out-of-pocket math changes at the start of each year.
  • Medigap premiums can change each year; insurers file those adjustments with the Ohio Department of Insurance, and you can request the rate guide before renewing.
  • To see which insurers sell Medigap in Hamilton County right now, use the Medicare.gov Medigap policy search by ZIP code or call Ohio SHIP (OSHIIP) for free help.

None of this is a crisis. But Medigap does not work like Medicare Advantage — there is no single Annual Enrollment Period that resets your options — so the calendar matters in a different way. Here is what Cincinnati readers should know.

Which plan letters you can actually buy

Medigap plans are standardized by letter, which means a Plan G sold by one insurer covers the same core benefits as a Plan G sold by another. What differs is price, customer service and, in some cases, extras.

For people newly eligible for Medicare today, the available letters are A, B, D, G, G-HD (a high-deductible version of G), K, L, M and N. Plans C and F are closed to newcomers — they are only available to people who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. If you already have a C or F, you can keep it; you just cannot start one fresh.

This eligibility rule has not changed for 2027, but it trips up new shoppers every year, especially those who hear about Plan F from a spouse or neighbor who enrolled earlier.

The Part B deductible reset — why January matters for G and N

Plans G and N are the two most commonly purchased letters for newly eligible enrollees. Both require you to meet the Part B deductible before the plan pays its share of outpatient costs. That deductible is set by the federal Medicare program and resets every January 1.

CMS announces the new Part B deductible amount for 2027 in the fall of 2026. Once it is published on Medicare.gov, that is the number your Plan G or N will be built around for the year. If you use a lot of outpatient care in January and February, that reset is when you feel it.

Plan N also has small copays for some office and emergency visits, and a separate rule about excess charges — worth reviewing with a SHIP counselor if you are choosing between G and N.

Rate-adjustment season in Ohio

Medigap premiums are not fixed by Medicare. Each insurer files its rates with the Ohio Department of Insurance, and those rates can change year to year based on claims experience, age, and the pricing method the company uses (community-rated, issue-age-rated or attained-age-rated).

There are three practical things Cincinnati residents can do:

1. When your renewal notice arrives, read the new premium carefully and compare it to what you paid last year. 2. Ask the Ohio Department of Insurance for its Medigap rate guide, which shows filed rates by company and plan letter. 3. Remember that after your initial Medigap Open Enrollment window closes, insurers in Ohio can generally use medical underwriting if you try to switch — so a lower advertised rate elsewhere is not automatically available to you.

Insurers entering or leaving the Ohio market

Medigap carriers occasionally add or drop Ohio from their footprint, or stop selling a particular plan letter to new applicants. Because there is no single public roster we can point to for 2027, the most reliable way to see who is actively selling in Hamilton County is the Medicare.gov Medigap policy search — enter a Cincinnati ZIP code and it returns the insurers licensed to sell each letter to someone in your situation.

If a carrier stops selling new policies, existing policyholders are generally not forced off their plan; the company simply closes it to new enrollees. Your renewal continues under the same terms, subject to rate changes.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch Medigap plans in Cincinnati during the fall enrollment window?
The October 15 – December 7 Annual Enrollment Period applies to Medicare Advantage and Part D, not Medigap. You can apply to change a Medigap plan any time of year, but outside of your initial Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a guaranteed-issue situation, the new insurer in Ohio can use medical underwriting.
How do I find out which insurers sell Medigap in Hamilton County for 2027?
Use the Medigap policy search at Medicare.gov with a Cincinnati ZIP code, request the Ohio Department of Insurance Medigap rate guide, or call Ohio's SHIP program (OSHIIP) at 1-800-686-1578 for free, unbiased help.
Why did my Medigap premium go up if the benefits are standardized?
Standardized benefits do not mean standardized prices. Each insurer files its own rates with the Ohio Department of Insurance, and premiums can rise based on age, claims trends and the company's pricing method. Standardization only guarantees that Plan G at Company A covers the same core services as Plan G at Company B.
Is Plan F really gone?
Plans C and F are closed to people who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. If you were eligible before that date, you can still buy or keep one; if you were not, those letters are not an option for you. ## Where to get help For personalized answers, start with Medicare.gov, call 1-800-MEDICARE, or contact Ohio's State Health Insurance Assistance Program, known as OSHIIP, at 1-800-686-1578. For questions specifically about filed rates or a company's status in Ohio, the Ohio Department of Insurance is the authoritative source.
