Is Your Doctor in the Network? How Plan Finder's Directory Changed for 2027

Checking whether your doctor takes a Medicare Advantage plan used to mean clicking through to the insurer's site, phoning the plan, or calling the doctor's office. For 2027, the official plan comparison tool on Medicare.gov — Medicare Plan Finder — makes that step easier. It now shows provider directory information for Medicare Advantage plans directly on the comparison screen. Here's what changed, what to watch for, and how to protect yourself if the information you see turns out to be wrong.

Key takeaways

  • Plan Finder on Medicare.gov now shows which doctors are in a Medicare Advantage plan's network, with 2027 data starting October 9, 2026.
  • A temporary 2026 Special Election Period lets you switch if you enrolled through Plan Finder and your doctor turned out not to be in-network — but only by calling 1-800-MEDICARE.
  • Annual Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, and your choices take effect January 1, 2027.
  • Plan Finder also now links directly to each plan's formulary, Evidence of Coverage, and Summary of Benefits so you can read the fine print before you enroll.

A directory inside the comparison tool

In 2025, CMS added a provider directory feature to Plan Finder on Medicare.gov. When you compare Medicare Advantage plans, you can look up a doctor or facility and see whether they are in a given plan's network. Previously you had to leave Plan Finder, open the insurer's directory, and verify it one plan at a time — a tedious step that often led to guesswork during Annual Enrollment.

For 2027 shopping, the directory information gets a refresh. On October 9, 2026, CMS replaces the 2026 third-party directory data with 2027 data supplied by the Medicare Advantage organizations themselves and validated by CMS. In other words, the information you see while comparing 2027 plans is intended to come straight from the plans, through a CMS review step.

CMS also told plans how the display will work. In a September 2, 2026 memo, CMS said that when you search a doctor or facility for a plan and ZIP code, Plan Finder will show that practitioner's or facility's 15 closest locations and flag which of them are in network for the plan. This helps when a doctor practices at multiple offices or hospitals — not every location is necessarily contracted.

What else is new on the plan details screen

Starting October 1, 2026, Plan Finder's plan detail pages add direct links to each plan's formulary (the drug list), Evidence of Coverage, and Summary of Benefits. These are the documents that spell out what a plan actually covers, what it costs you, and the rules behind both. Having them one click away makes it easier to confirm what the summary tiles are telling you before you enroll.

If the directory was wrong: a one-time Special Election Period

Because directory data is new and may contain errors in its first year, CMS created a temporary Special Election Period for 2026. It is meant for people who enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan through Plan Finder based on inaccurate provider information.

To use it, all of the following must apply:

A few important limits: this Special Election Period is only available by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). Plans cannot process it directly. And it applies only to incorrect information from Plan Finder — not errors you found on a plan's own website.

Under this Special Election Period, you can enroll in a new Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage) or return to Original Medicare (with or without a stand-alone Part D plan). Your new coverage starts on the first day of the month after your application date. The window is available through 2026 only.

How this fits into the enrollment calendar

Annual Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, with choices taking effect January 1, 2027. If you want to use the new directory feature, this is the main window to shop and compare.

Program-wide, a few 2027 figures are set:

The 2027 Part B standard premium and deductible, and the 2027 IRMAA income brackets, have not been announced yet. CMS typically announces them in the fall. Watch Medicare.gov for the official numbers.

A quick word on Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare + Medigap

The new directory feature is specific to Medicare Advantage plans, which use networks. Original Medicare, by contrast, is accepted by any provider who takes Medicare, and many people pair it with a Medigap policy and a stand-alone Part D plan. Each path has trade-offs: Medicare Advantage plans often bundle extras and have different cost-sharing rules, while Original Medicare + Medigap offers broader provider access and predictable out-of-pocket costs but separate premiums. Neither is universally better — it depends on your doctors, prescriptions, travel patterns, and budget.

If you have Medicaid or Extra Help

Since 2025, people with Medicaid or Extra Help have a monthly Special Enrollment Period to move to Original Medicare with a stand-alone Part D plan, or to switch stand-alone Part D plans. Full-benefit dual-eligible individuals can also join an integrated D-SNP in any month. These options exist year-round, not just during Annual Enrollment.
