Key takeaways
- Your Initial Enrollment Period runs seven months: the three months before your 65th birthday month, the month itself, and the three months after.
- Signing up before your birthday month usually means coverage starts the first day of your birthday month.
- Missing your IEP without other creditable coverage can lead to lifelong Part B and Part D late penalties.
- Free, unbiased help is available in Pearl through Mississippi's SHIP program and at medicare.gov.
What the Initial Enrollment Period actually is
The IEP is your first chance to sign up for Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). It lasts seven months total. For most people in Pearl, that means the three months before you turn 65, your birthday month, and the three months after.
If you sign up in the three months before your birthday month, your coverage generally begins the first day of your birthday month. If you wait until your birthday month or later, coverage starts the month after you enroll. That delay can leave a short gap, so earlier is usually smoother.
Do you need to sign up, or are you automatic?
If you're already getting Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits when you turn 65, you'll usually be enrolled in Part A and Part B automatically. Your red, white, and blue Medicare card should arrive in the mail about three months before your birthday.
If you're not yet drawing those benefits — which is more and more common as people work longer — you need to sign up yourself at ssa.gov or by calling Social Security. Nothing happens automatically in that case.
Still working past 65?
Many people in the Pearl area keep working past 65 and have health insurance through an employer. If that employer has 20 or more employees, you may be able to delay Part B without a penalty and enroll later through a Special Enrollment Period.
If the employer has fewer than 20 employees, Medicare usually becomes your primary coverage at 65, and delaying can cause problems. Before you turn down Part B, talk to your benefits administrator and confirm in writing whether your coverage is considered "creditable."
Choosing your path: Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage
Once you have Part A and Part B, you have a decision to make about how you want to receive your benefits.
- Original Medicare (Parts A and B) with the option to add a stand-alone Part D drug plan and, if you choose, a Medigap supplement policy.
- Medicare Advantage (Part C), which bundles Part A, Part B, and usually Part D through a private plan approved by Medicare.
Pearl sits in Rankin County, where a range of Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are offered by multiple carriers. Plan availability, provider networks, and drug lists are set at the county level, so two neighbors in the same ZIP code will see the same menu of options. You can compare what's available for Rankin County using the Plan Finder at medicare.gov.
Watch the Part D deadline, too
Even if you don't take many prescriptions today, signing up for Part D drug coverage during your IEP matters. If you go more than 63 days without creditable drug coverage after you're first eligible, you can face a Part D late enrollment penalty — and it sticks with you as long as you have Medicare.
A few Part D numbers worth knowing:
- Part D has a new $2,100 out-of-pocket cap on covered prescription drugs.
- The Part D deductible can be no more than $615 in 2026 and $700 in 2027.
- The old "donut hole" coverage gap is gone — Part D now has three phases.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread your drug costs across the year in monthly payments instead of paying big amounts at the pharmacy counter.
- IRMAA income surcharges on Part B and Part D start above $109,000 for a single filer in 2026.
Key dates to circle
Once you're enrolled, two windows matter every year:
- Annual Enrollment Period: October 15 – December 7. You can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.
- Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: January 1 – March 31. If you're already in an Advantage plan, you can switch to another one or return to Original Medicare.
Mark them on the calendar now so future decisions don't sneak up on you.
