Fort Smith Medicare Advantage Deadline: March 31 Rules

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The calendar is the single most important tool for Medicare Advantage members in Sebastian County right now. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs from January 1 through March 31, and it is the last regular chance most enrollees have to change their Advantage plan before the next fall Annual Enrollment Period. Missing the March 31 cutoff — or misunderstanding what this window actually allows — is one of the most common and avoidable mistakes local beneficiaries make.

Key takeaways

  • The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31 each year, per CMS.
  • Only people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1 can use this window.
  • You get one change during this period, and it takes effect the first day of the following month.
  • If you miss March 31, you generally must wait for the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7) unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

Why the January–March window exists

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (often shortened to MA-OEP) is a "correction" window. Congress created it so that people who signed up for an Advantage plan during the fall Annual Enrollment Period, then discovered in January that the plan was not the right fit, would have a way to fix that choice without waiting a full year.

It is not a second open shopping season for everyone on Medicare. It is narrower than that, and the timing rules matter.

Who can use it in Sebastian County

You can use the MA-OEP if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan as of January 1. That includes Advantage plans with or without drug coverage.

You cannot use it if you have Original Medicare only. If your only coverage on January 1 is Parts A and B (with or without a stand-alone Part D plan or a Medigap policy), the MA-OEP does not apply to you. Your next regular chance to make changes will be the Annual Enrollment Period in the fall.

What you can change between Jan. 1 and March 31

During this window, you may make one change. The options are:

What you cannot do here: switch from Original Medicare into a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time, or join or switch a stand-alone Part D plan unless you are also leaving Advantage. Medigap (Medicare Supplement) enrollment follows its own separate rules and is not tied to this window.

When the change actually starts

Coverage changes made during the MA-OEP take effect on the first day of the month after the plan gets your request. A change made in January starts February 1. A change made March 30 starts May 1. Plan accordingly if you are trying to line up a doctor's appointment, a prescription refill, or a scheduled procedure.

What happens if you miss March 31

After March 31, the door closes for most people until the Annual Enrollment Period, which runs October 15 through December 7. Changes made during AEP take effect January 1 of the following year — so a missed spring window can mean nine months of waiting.

There are exceptions called Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs). You may qualify for one if, for example, you move out of your plan's service area, lose other creditable coverage, become eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid, or your plan's contract with Medicare changes. Sebastian County residents who think a life event applies to them should confirm with Medicare before assuming they qualify.

How the dates interact across the year

It helps to see the full picture:

A few program-level facts are worth keeping in mind as you weigh a change: the Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 in 2026 and $2,400 in 2027, the maximum Part D deductible is $615 in 2026 and $700 in 2027, the coverage gap is gone (drug coverage now has three phases), and the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread drug costs across the calendar year in monthly installments.

A quick word on local availability

Fort Smith is in Sebastian County, where beneficiaries typically have a range of Medicare Advantage plans to compare. Plan lineups can change from year to year, so if you last shopped a few years ago, the choices in front of you today may look different.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch from Original Medicare into a Medicare Advantage plan between January and March?
No. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is only for people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan as of January 1. If you have Original Medicare, you generally need to wait for the Annual Enrollment Period from October 15 through December 7, unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
How many changes can I make during the MA Open Enrollment Period?
One. Once your change is processed, the window closes for you even if it is still before March 31. Take time to compare options before you submit anything.
When will my new coverage start if I switch in February?
Coverage begins the first day of the month after the plan receives your enrollment request. A change made in February typically starts March 1.
What if I move out of Fort Smith during the year?
Moving out of your plan's service area usually opens a Special Enrollment Period, which lets you make a change outside the regular windows. Call 1-800-MEDICARE or contact Arkansas SHIIP to confirm your specific situation and timing.
