CHULA VISTA, Calif. — As the Annual Enrollment Period for 2027 coverage opens Oct. 15, 2026, some Medicare Advantage members in San Diego County will get a letter they did not expect: a notice that their current plan will not be offered next year. According to the CMS 2027 Medicare Advantage Landscape Source File, 26 plans available in San Diego County in 2026 are not returning for 2027. Chula Vista is in San Diego County, so the change applies here. If your plan is on the list below, you have options — and extra time — to pick what comes next.

Which Medicare Advantage plans are not returning to San Diego County for 2027?

CMS's 2027 Landscape file shows 26 Medicare Advantage plans offered in San Diego County in 2026 are not in the 2027 file for the county. The county's 2027 lineup is 85 plans from 15 carriers. If you live in Chula Vista and are enrolled in one of the plans below, your coverage ends Dec. 31, 2026.

The plans not returning for 2027, in alphabetical order by carrier:

If your plan is not on this list, it is expected to be offered again in 2027 — but it may have changes. Read your plan's Annual Notice of Change (ANOC), which arrives in late September.

How will I know if my Chula Vista Medicare Advantage plan is ending?

Your insurer is required to mail you a non-renewal letter — a plain-language notice that your plan will not be offered in 2027. These letters go out by early October 2026, before Annual Enrollment opens on Oct. 15.

The letter will say the plan is being discontinued, give the exact date your coverage ends (Dec. 31, 2026), explain your options, and describe the Special Enrollment Period you qualify for. Keep the letter. You may need to show it when you enroll in a new plan or apply for a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy.

If you cannot find the letter but suspect your plan is affected, call the member services number on your plan ID card, or check the list above.

What happens if I do nothing after my plan is non-renewed?

If you take no action, you will automatically be returned to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) on Jan. 1, 2027. You will not be without hospital or doctor coverage — but there are two things to know.

First, Original Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage. If your current Medicare Advantage plan includes drugs (most do) and you want to keep drug coverage, you need to actively enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan or a new Medicare Advantage plan that includes drugs.

Second, Original Medicare has no out-of-pocket maximum for Part A and Part B services. Many people pair Original Medicare with a Medigap policy to help cover deductibles and coinsurance. If you want Medigap, timing matters — see the next section.

What is the Special Enrollment Period for a plan that is leaving?

Because your plan is being discontinued through no fault of yours, Medicare gives you a Special Enrollment Period that runs from Dec. 8, 2026 through the end of February 2027. During this window you can:

You can also use the regular Annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7, 2026) to pick a 2027 plan that starts Jan. 1. Acting during Annual Enrollment is the cleanest way to avoid any gap in coverage, especially for prescriptions.

Can I buy a Medigap policy if my Medicare Advantage plan is ending?

At the federal program level, when a Medicare Advantage plan leaves your area, you have a guaranteed-issue right to buy certain Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policies. That means an insurer cannot turn you down or charge you more because of your health, as long as you apply within the required window. The policies and timing you qualify for are set by federal rules and, in California, by state rules as well.

California also has its own Medigap protections, including a yearly "birthday rule" that lets existing Medigap enrollees switch to certain policies without medical underwriting. Because state rules can affect which policies are available and when, contact the California Department of Insurance for details that apply to you.

What should Chula Vista residents do between now and Dec. 7, 2026?

Three practical steps:

1. Read the non-renewal letter and your plan's Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) carefully. 2. Use the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov to compare 2027 plans available in San Diego County — enter your ZIP code and your prescriptions to see your real costs and whether your doctors and pharmacies are in network. 3. Decide by Dec. 7, 2026 if possible, so your new coverage starts Jan. 1, 2027 without a gap. If you need more time, the Special Enrollment Period for non-renewed members runs through the end of February 2027.

Frequently asked questions

When will I get the non-renewal letter from my plan?
Insurers mail non-renewal notices by early October 2026, before the Annual Enrollment Period begins on Oct. 15. If you have not received one by mid-October and think your plan may be affected, call the number on your member ID card or check the list in this article.
If I do nothing, will I lose my doctor and my prescription coverage on Jan. 1, 2027?
You will be moved to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) on Jan. 1, 2027, which lets you see any provider who accepts Medicare — so you will not lose doctor coverage. However, Original Medicare does not include prescription drugs, so you would need to enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan or a new Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage to keep that benefit.
How long is my Special Enrollment Period if my plan is ending?
When your Medicare Advantage plan is non-renewed, you have a Special Enrollment Period that runs from Dec. 8, 2026 through the end of February 2027 to pick a new Medicare Advantage plan or a stand-alone Part D plan. You can also make your choice earlier during Annual Enrollment, Oct. 15 – Dec. 7, 2026.
Where can I get personalized help comparing 2027 plans in Chula Vista?
Start at medicare.gov, where the Plan Finder shows every 2027 plan available in your ZIP code with your drugs and preferred pharmacy. You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 1-877-486-2048), which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
