Key takeaways
- Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, and changes made in that window take effect January 1, 2027.
- The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31 for people already in an Advantage plan.
- Your Initial Enrollment Period is a seven-month window around your 65th birthday; missing it can trigger lifetime Part B and Part D late penalties.
- Bonneville County had 18 Medicare Advantage plans from 5 carriers for 2026; the 2027 lineup is in each plan's ANOC and on Medicare.gov's Plan Finder, so a personal review before December 7 is worth the time.
The two windows almost everyone should know
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7. This is the big one. During AEP, anyone with Medicare can:
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or vice versa.
- Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
- Join, drop, or switch a Part D prescription drug plan.
Whatever you choose takes effect January 1, 2027. If December 7 passes and you did nothing, your current coverage rolls forward — even if your plan's costs, drug list, or provider network changed for the new year. That is why the fall notice your plan sends (the Annual Notice of Change) is worth opening.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP): January 1 – March 31. This one is narrower. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1, you get one chance to switch to a different Advantage plan or drop back to Original Medicare (and add a Part D plan). You cannot use this window to move from Original Medicare into an Advantage plan.
Turning 65 in Idaho Falls? Your seven-month clock
Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the three months before your 65th birthday month, your birthday month itself, and the three months after — seven months in all. Sign up during that window and coverage begins without a penalty.
Two penalties to know about:
- Part B late enrollment penalty. If you do not have other qualifying coverage (like active employer insurance) and skip Part B at 65, your monthly premium can go up 10% for each full 12-month period you were eligible but not enrolled — and you pay it for as long as you have Part B.
- Part D late enrollment penalty. Go more than 63 days without creditable drug coverage after you are first eligible, and a permanent surcharge is added to your Part D premium.
Idaho has 10 stand-alone Part D plans for 2026, sold statewide, and 8 for 2027; the 2027 lineup is in each plan's ANOC and on Medicare.gov's Plan Finder. In practice, most people who want drug coverage get it bundled inside a Medicare Advantage plan (MA-PD). If you are on Original Medicare and want drug coverage, call 1-800-MEDICARE or your local SHIP to talk through options — do not simply skip Part D and assume you can add it later without cost.
Losing job coverage or moving? Special Enrollment Periods
Life events can open a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) outside the usual windows. Common triggers include:
- Losing employer or union coverage.
- Moving out of your plan's service area (a real consideration if you leave Bonneville County).
- Qualifying for Extra Help or Medicaid.
- Your plan leaving Medicare or changing its contract.
SEPs usually last about two months from the qualifying event. The rules are specific, so confirm your window before you assume you have one.
How the dates interact — a quick scenario
Say you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan during AEP this fall. Coverage starts January 1. In February, you realize the plan's pharmacy network does not include your usual drugstore. Because you are already in an Advantage plan, MA OEP (January 1 – March 31) gives you one switch — to another Advantage plan or back to Original Medicare. After March 31, you generally wait until the next AEP unless a Special Enrollment Period applies.
That is why the fall review matters. The cleaner your December 7 decision, the less you have to fix in the spring.
A few program facts worth knowing for 2026 and 2027
- The Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 in 2026 and $2,400 in 2027. Once your covered drug spending hits that amount, you pay nothing for covered drugs the rest of the year.
- The Part D maximum deductible is $615 in 2026 and $700 in 2027.
- The coverage gap ("donut hole") is gone as of 2025 — Part D now has three phases instead of four.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread drug costs across the year in monthly installments instead of paying at the pharmacy counter.
- IRMAA income-based surcharges on Part B and Part D start above $109,000 for a single filer in 2026.
