Indianapolis — Fall 2026. Open enrollment is here, and the window to pick a 2027 Medicare Advantage plan runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026. Whatever you choose takes effect January 1, 2027. If you do nothing, your current plan simply renews into next year — if it is still offered — with any changes spelled out in its Annual Notice of Change (ANOC).

Indianapolis sits in Marion County, where plan availability is set. For 2027, Marion County has 79 Medicare Advantage plans from 11 carriers, up slightly from 78 plans in 2026. That is a lot to sort through, but a careful side-by-side comparison in the Medicare Plan Finder makes it manageable.

What is on offer in Marion County for 2027

The 79 Medicare Advantage plans available in the county for 2027 break down this way: 22 HMO plans, 15 HMO-POS plans, and 42 PPO plans. All 79 include prescription drug coverage.

There are also Special Needs Plans (SNPs) for people who qualify: 12 Dual-Eligible SNPs (D-SNPs) for people with both Medicare and Medicaid, 13 Chronic Condition SNPs (C-SNPs) for people with qualifying conditions like diabetes, heart disease or kidney disease, and 9 Institutional SNPs (I-SNPs).

The 11 carriers offering plans in Marion County for 2027, in alphabetical order, are: Aetna (CVS Health) with 5 plans; American Health Advantage of Indiana with 1 plan; Centene (WellCare) with 3 plans; Communicare Advantage with 1 plan; Devoted Health with 6 plans; Elevance Health (Anthem) with 16 plans; Humana with 20 plans; MyTruAdvantage with 4 plans; Provider Partners Health Plans with 3 plans; UnitedHealthcare with 11 plans; and Zing Health with 9 plans. The table below lists every plan.

What's new for 2027

Fifteen plans are new in Marion County for 2027, and fourteen plans will not be returning. Some existing plans have also been renamed. If your plan is one that is leaving, you will get a non-renewal letter from your insurer — read it carefully, because it includes your options and your special enrollment rights.

Program-wide changes also matter in 2027. The Part D out-of-pocket cap rises to $2,400 (up from $2,100 in 2026), and the Part D maximum deductible rises to $700 (up from $615 in 2026). The 2027 Part B premium and deductible, and the IRMAA income brackets, have not been announced yet — CMS typically releases those figures later in the fall.

Step 1: Read your Annual Notice of Change

Your plan mailed your ANOC in September. It compares your 2026 coverage to your 2027 coverage: premium, deductible, copays, drug tier placement, the network, and extra benefits. Flag anything that changed. If a drug you take moved to a higher tier, or if your primary care doctor is no longer in-network, that is your signal to shop.

Step 2: Check doctors and hospitals

Before anything else, make a list of the providers you want to keep — your primary care doctor, specialists, and your preferred hospital system (in Indianapolis, that often means Community Health Network, IU Health, Ascension St. Vincent, Franciscan Health or Eskenazi Health). Then confirm each one is in the plan's network. The Plan Finder links to each plan's provider directory, but it is worth calling the doctor's office directly to confirm — networks can change mid-year.

HMO plans generally require you to stay in-network except for emergencies. PPO plans let you go out-of-network, usually at a higher cost. HMO-POS plans sit in between.

Step 3: Enter your prescriptions and pharmacy

This is where the Plan Finder earns its keep. Go to medicare.gov, create or sign in to your account, and enter every drug you take, with the dose and quantity. Then add your preferred pharmacy — a CVS, Walgreens, Kroger, or Meijer near you, or a mail-order option. The tool will show your estimated yearly drug cost under each plan, not just the premium.

Pharmacies matter because a "preferred" pharmacy inside a plan's network usually has lower cost-sharing than a "standard" one. The same drug, at the same chain, can cost different amounts depending on which plan you pick.

Step 4: Add it all up

Compare total estimated yearly cost — premiums plus drug costs plus expected medical copays — rather than just the sticker premium. A plan with a $0 premium can cost more over a year if your drugs are on expensive tiers or your specialist copays are high. Also look at the maximum out-of-pocket limit for medical costs; that is your worst-case ceiling.

If drug costs are a concern, ask your plan about the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, which lets you spread Part D out-of-pocket costs across the year in monthly installments.

Step 5: Decide, enroll, and keep your paperwork

Once you have a plan in mind, enroll through medicare.gov, by calling 1-800-MEDICARE, or directly with the insurer. Save the confirmation number. If you change your mind, you have the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 through March 31, 2027, to switch to a different Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare one time.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I miss the December 7 deadline?
Your current plan renews into 2027 with the changes listed in your ANOC. You generally cannot switch Medicare Advantage plans again until the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31, 2027), which allows one change, or until the next Annual Enrollment Period in fall 2027, unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
My plan is not returning in 2027. What do I do?
You will get a non-renewal notice from your insurer. You qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to pick a new Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare with a stand-alone Part D plan. The simplest path is to compare the remaining Marion County plans on medicare.gov's Plan Finder before December 7, 2026.
Do I need to re-enroll each year if I like my plan?
No. If your plan is offered again next year, it renews automatically. Review the ANOC each fall anyway, because premiums, drug formularies, networks and extra benefits can change from year to year.
How do Special Needs Plans work?
SNPs are Medicare Advantage plans built for specific groups: people with both Medicare and Medicaid (D-SNP), people with certain chronic conditions (C-SNP), or people living in a nursing home or needing that level of care (I-SNP). You must meet the eligibility rules for the SNP you join. Marion County has 12 D-SNPs, 13 C-SNPs and 9 I-SNPs for 2027. ## Where to get personalized help For a side-by-side comparison tied to your drugs, pharmacy and doctors, use the Medicare Plan Finder at **medicare.gov/plan-compare**.
