Not returning for 2027Louisville, KY

Key takeaways

  • 13 Medicare Advantage plans offered in Jefferson County in 2026 are not returning for 2027; the plan's non-renewal letter (sometimes called a plan termination notice) is how you'll know.
  • If you do nothing, you'll be moved to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) on January 1, 2027 — with no Part D drug coverage unless you add it.
  • Members of a non-renewing plan get a Special Enrollment Period that runs through February 28, 2027, to pick a new Medicare Advantage plan or a stand-alone Part D plan.
  • Leaving a Medicare Advantage plan that's ending may also give you a guaranteed-issue right to buy certain Medigap policies — check with the Kentucky Department of Insurance for state specifics.

LOUISVILLE — If you open your mailbox this fall and find a letter saying your Medicare Advantage plan will not be offered in 2027, you are not alone. According to CMS's 2027 Medicare Advantage Landscape file, 13 Medicare Advantage plans sold in Jefferson County this year are not coming back for 2027. Louisville is in Jefferson County, so the change applies to residents enrolled in any of those plans.

The good news: you have time, you have choices, and you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period that most people do not get. Here is how to tell if your plan is on the list, what happens if you do nothing, and how to use the window the rules give you.

How to tell if your plan is one of the 13

Your plan is required to mail you a non-renewal notice (sometimes called a plan termination letter) by early October. It will say the plan will not be offered in 2027 and explain your options. If you don't recall seeing one, check the envelopes from your insurer carefully — the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) and a non-renewal letter are different documents.

The 13 plans not returning in Jefferson County for 2027, by carrier, are listed in the table below. In alphabetical order by carrier, they are:

If the name on your member ID card matches one on this list, your plan is ending December 31, 2026.

What happens if you do nothing

A Medicare Advantage plan ending is different from a plan simply changing its benefits. If your plan is renewing (even with changes), doing nothing means you stay in it. If your plan is not renewing, you can't stay — there is no plan to stay in.

If you take no action by December 31, 2026, Medicare will automatically return you to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) starting January 1, 2027. That coverage will pay for hospital and medical care under the standard Medicare rules, but it does not include prescription drug coverage. If your old plan had drug coverage built in (and all 13 of these did), you'll be without a Part D plan on January 1 unless you sign up for one.

That gap is the main reason not to simply let the clock run out.

Your Special Enrollment Period

Because your plan is leaving the market, you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that most people don't have. It runs from December 8, 2026 through February 28, 2027. During that window you can:

A choice made during this SEP generally takes effect the first of the month after you enroll. You can also still use the regular Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7, 2026) to pick your 2027 coverage in advance — many people in a non-renewing plan do, so there is no gap.

What about Medigap?

If you decide to leave Medicare Advantage entirely and go back to Original Medicare, you may want a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy to help with the out-of-pocket costs Original Medicare doesn't cover. Federal rules give people in your situation a guaranteed-issue right to buy certain Medigap policies — meaning the insurer must sell to you and can't charge more for health reasons — for a limited time after your Medicare Advantage plan ends.

State rules vary on exactly which Medigap plans qualify and how long the window lasts. For Kentucky-specific guidance, contact the Kentucky Department of Insurance.

The 2027 landscape in Jefferson County

For context: CMS's 2027 file shows 67 Medicare Advantage plans from 10 carriers will be offered in Jefferson County next year — the same total headcount as 2026, because 13 plans are leaving, 13 new ones are being added, and 9 are being renamed. The table on this page shows the full roster. If a plan you're considering has a new name, the ANOC from your current insurer should spell out whether it's a renamed version of your existing plan or a different product altogether.

A couple of 2027 program numbers to keep in mind as you compare drug coverage: the Part D out-of-pocket cap rises to $2,400 in 2027 (up from $2,100 in 2026), and the Part D maximum deductible rises to $700 in 2027 (up from $615 in 2026). CMS will publish the 2027 Part B premium, deductible, and IRMAA income brackets later this fall.

A simple plan of action

1. Find your non-renewal letter and confirm your plan is on the list above. 2. Decide: do you want to pick a new Medicare Advantage plan, or go back to Original Medicare with a stand-alone Part D plan (and possibly a Medigap policy)? 3. Use the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov to compare 2027 plans by your doctors, pharmacies, and prescriptions. Or call 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 1-877-486-2048), available 24/7. 4. Enroll by December 7, 2026 if you can, or during your SEP through February 28, 2027.

Frequently asked questions

How will I know for sure my plan is ending?
Your insurer is required to mail you a non-renewal notice this fall. It will clearly say the plan will not be offered in 2027. If you've misplaced it, call the member services number on your ID card, or compare the plan name on your card against the list in this article.
If I do nothing, will I lose Medicare entirely?
No. You keep Medicare. On January 1, 2027 you'd be covered by Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). What you would lose is the Medicare Advantage plan's extra benefits and, importantly, prescription drug coverage — which is why most people in a non-renewing plan choose a new plan instead of letting the default happen.
When exactly can I enroll in a new plan?
Two windows. The Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7, 2026) is open to everyone and your choice starts January 1, 2027. The Special Enrollment Period for a non-renewing plan runs through February 28, 2027 and is in addition to the regular window.
Can I buy a Medigap plan if I go back to Original Medicare?
Often, yes — and in your situation federal rules may give you a guaranteed-issue right, so insurers can't turn you down or charge more for health reasons. The exact plan letters and timing depend on state rules. The Kentucky Department of Insurance can walk you through what's available here. --- For personalized help comparing 2027 plans, use the Medicare Plan Finder at **medicare.gov** or call **1-800-MEDICARE** (1-800-633-4227), TTY 1-877-486-2048, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
