Key takeaways
- CMS data show 20 Medicare Advantage plans offered in New York County in 2026 are not returning for 2027; the full list appears in the table below.
- If your plan is ending, your carrier must mail a non-renewal letter this fall explaining the change and your options.
- If you do nothing, you will be moved to Original Medicare (Parts A and B) on January 1, 2027, with no drug coverage attached.
- Members of a non-renewed plan get a Special Enrollment Period that runs through February 28, 2027, to pick a new Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.
New York City — If you have a Medicare Advantage plan in New York City, check your mail this fall. According to the CMS Medicare Advantage Landscape files for 2026 and 2027, 20 plans sold in New York County this year are not being offered again in 2027. New York City sits inside New York County, so these county-level changes apply to city residents enrolled in those plans.
If you are in one of these plans, your insurer is required to send you a non-renewal letter — sometimes called a plan termination notice — this fall. You still have coverage through December 31, 2026. But you need to make a choice for January 1, 2027, and you have a special window to do it.
How to tell if your plan is ending
Insurers are required to send an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) each fall to every member. If your plan is being discontinued, you will instead receive a non-renewal notice — a separate letter that says your current plan will not be offered in 2027. It will usually arrive by early October.
Open any envelope from your Medicare Advantage insurer. The letter will state the exact end date of your coverage (December 31, 2026), your options, and the deadlines that apply to you. If you have thrown it away or are not sure, call the member services number on the back of your plan ID card, or call 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 1-877-486-2048).

What happens if you do nothing
If your plan is on this list and you make no choice by December 31, 2026, you will not be left without insurance — but you will not stay in a Medicare Advantage plan either. On January 1, 2027, you will be enrolled in Original Medicare (Part A for hospital, Part B for doctor visits).
Two things to know about that default:
- Original Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage. If you want Part D, you have to actively sign up for a stand‑alone drug plan.
- Original Medicare has no annual out-of-pocket cap. Many people pair it with a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy to help with cost sharing.
Doing nothing is a decision — just make sure it is the one you want.
Your Special Enrollment Period
Because your plan is being discontinued through no fault of your own, Medicare gives you a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). For members of a non-renewed Medicare Advantage plan, that SEP runs from December 8, 2026 through the end of February 2027 (February 28, 2027). During this window you can:
- Enroll in a different Medicare Advantage plan offered in New York County for 2027, or
- Return to Original Medicare and add a stand‑alone Part D prescription drug plan.
You can also make a change earlier, during the regular Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7, 2026). A change made then takes effect January 1, 2027.
There is also a program-level Medigap guaranteed-issue right when your Medicare Advantage plan leaves the market. That means insurers must sell you certain Medigap policies without using your health history against you, within a defined window. New York has its own rules on Medigap availability and pricing — for specifics, contact the New York State Department of Financial Services or call 1-800-MEDICARE.
What to look for in 2027
Even if you choose another Medicare Advantage plan, read the ANOC carefully. For 2027, CMS has confirmed:
- The Part D out-of-pocket cap rises to $2,400 (from $2,100 in 2026).
- The Part D maximum deductible rises to $700 (from $615 in 2026).
- The Part D national base beneficiary premium is $41.33 — this is a formula input, not what any plan charges.
The 2027 Part B standard premium and deductible, and the 2027 IRMAA income brackets, have not been announced yet. CMS typically releases those figures in November.
