Medicare Advantage
Wylie Medicare Advantage members get a second window Jan–March
Collin County has 81 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Compared with 2026, 37 plans are not coming back, 21 are new, and 30 continuing plans changed in some way you should check before December 7, 9 of them under a new name. This guide covers what those numbers mean for Wylie, not which plan to pick.

WYLIE, Texas — If you signed up for a Medicare Advantage plan during last fall's Annual Enrollment Period and something about it isn't sitting right, you have another chance this winter. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31 every year, and it gives people already in a Medicare Advantage plan a limited window to switch course.
Key takeaways
- - The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31 each year for people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1.
- People in Original Medicare on January 1 cannot use this period to join a Medicare Advantage plan or add a stand-alone Part D plan.
- During this window you can only make one plan change, and the new coverage starts the first day of the following month.
- Medicare Advantage plans are offered by county, so the plans available depend on which county you live in, such as Collin County for Wylie residents.
The Jan. 1–March 31 window is a second chance, not a do-over
It's a narrower period than the fall enrollment window most people know about. But used correctly, it can help Wylie residents fix a mistake, move to a plan that better fits a new prescription, or return to Original Medicare if Advantage isn't working out.
Who can use this period — and who can't
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is only for people who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1.
If that's you, you can:
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage).
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and go back to Original Medicare (Parts A and B).
- If you return to Original Medicare, you can also join a standalone Part D prescription drug plan.
If you're in Original Medicare on January 1, this period doesn't apply to you. You generally can't use it to join a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time or to pick up a Part D plan on its own. For those moves, you'd usually need to wait for the next Annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15–Dec. 7) or qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
You only get one change
This is the rule that trips people up most. During the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, you can only make one change, and it takes effect the first day of the following month. So if you switch plans on February 10, your new coverage starts March 1 — and you can't switch again in March just because you changed your mind.
Take your time. Compare the plan's drug list, provider network, and cost-sharing structure before you file the change.
What's new for 2027 that might affect your decision
Some program-level updates are worth knowing as you evaluate whether your current plan still fits:
- Part D out-of-pocket cap of $2,400 for 2027. Once your covered drug costs hit that number, you pay nothing more for the rest of the year on covered prescriptions.
- Part D deductible maximum of $700 for 2027 (plans can charge less).
- The coverage gap ("donut hole") is gone as of 2025 — Part D now has three phases instead of four.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread your drug costs across monthly payments instead of paying big amounts at the pharmacy counter. You can opt in through your plan.
- IRMAA surcharges — extra premium amounts based on income — start above $109,000 for a single filer in 2026.
None of these change what you can do during Open Enrollment, but they may change whether you want to.
Wylie sits in Collin County — here's how availability works
Medicare Advantage plans are offered at the county level, not the city level. Wylie is in Collin County, so the plans available to you are the ones licensed to serve Collin County residents. If you have friends or family in Dallas County or Rockwall County, their choices may look different from yours — that's normal.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Don't assume nothing changed. Plans update their drug lists, networks, and costs every year. The plan you liked in 2025 may not be the same in 2027.
- Don't drop Advantage without a plan for prescriptions. If you return to Original Medicare, remember to also enroll in a standalone Part D plan if you take prescriptions.
- Don't forget Medigap rules. If you leave Medicare Advantage to go back to Original Medicare, buying a Medigap (Supplement) policy may require medical underwriting depending on your situation. Ask before you switch.
- Don't wait until March 31. Give yourself time to research and, if needed, talk to a counselor.
