Same Medigap Plan G, different insurers: how to compare them in Cape Coral

In Cape Coral, shoppers often ask a fair question: if Medigap Plan G is standardized, why do so many companies sell it — and how do you pick one? Cape Coral is in Lee County, and like the rest of Florida, residents have a long list of insurers selling the same lettered plans. The coverage inside each letter is set by federal rules, so a Plan G from one company pays the same benefits as a Plan G from another. What changes is the company behind the policy: how it prices the plan, how often it raises rates, whether it offers a household discount, and how it handles medical underwriting outside your open enrollment window.

Key takeaways

  • The same Medigap letter (for example, Plan G or Plan N) covers the exact same benefits at every insurer — differences come from price, rate history, discounts and underwriting.
  • Florida insurers can use community rating, issue-age rating or attained-age rating, and the pricing method affects how your premium changes as you get older.
  • Outside your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, most insurers can use medical underwriting to decide whether to sell you a policy or what to charge.
  • Use the Medicare.gov Medigap policy search and the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation rate guide to compare insurers side by side; the table below lists every insurer selling Medigap in Florida.

The same letter is the same coverage

Medigap plans have been standardized by federal law for decades. If you buy Plan G, the benefits are identical whether the policy is issued by AARP – UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company, Florida Blue, Mutual of Omaha (United World Life Insurance Company), or any other carrier selling Plan G in Florida. No insurer can add extra medical benefits inside a lettered plan, and none can leave any out.

For someone new to Medicare in 2026, the letters available are A, B, D, G, G-HD, K, L, M and N. Plans C and F are only available to people who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. High-deductible versions of F and G work like a regular Plan F or G once you meet the yearly deductible.

Because the coverage is fixed, the comparison shifts to the company. That is where real differences show up.

How Florida insurers set the price

Medigap insurers in Florida can use one of three pricing methods, and it matters more than most shoppers realize.

Two insurers can sell the identical Plan G and price it very differently over a 20-year retirement, simply because one uses attained-age rating and the other uses issue-age rating. Ask the insurer directly which method it uses for the plan letter you are considering.

Rate history and household discounts

A low starting premium is not the whole story. Ask each insurer how often it has raised rates on that plan letter in Florida over the last three to five years, and by how much. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation publishes rate filings, and some companies will provide their own history on request. Rate history is one of the most useful — and most overlooked — data points when comparing carriers.

Many insurers also offer a household discount if another adult in your home has a policy with the same company, or in some cases simply lives with you. The size of the discount and who qualifies varies by company, so it is worth asking.

Medical underwriting and when it applies

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a one-time, six-month window that starts the month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During this window, any insurer selling the plan you want must sell it to you, cannot charge you more for health reasons, and cannot make you wait for pre-existing conditions (beyond limited rules if you had no prior creditable coverage).

Outside that window, most Florida insurers can use medical underwriting. That means they can ask health questions, review your prescriptions, and either decline you or charge more. A handful of guaranteed-issue situations exist under federal law — for example, if your employer coverage ends or a Medicare Advantage plan leaves your area. If you are switching Medigap plans later in life, ask each insurer up front what its underwriting looks like.

Who sells Medigap in Cape Coral

Cape Coral residents can consider any insurer licensed to sell Medigap in Florida. The table on this page lists every company, along with the plan letters each one offers. You will see familiar national names such as AARP – UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company, AFLAC, Humana (Humana Insurance Company), Mutual of Omaha (United World Life Insurance Company), State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and USAA Life Insurance Company, as well as Florida-focused options like Florida Blue and smaller carriers such as Everence Association Inc. and WoodmenLife.

Not every insurer sells every plan letter. For example, some offer only A, F, G and N, while others also sell the high-deductible G or Plans K and L. Match the letter you want first, then compare the insurers that actually offer it.

How to compare, step by step

1. Decide which plan letter fits your budget and how you use care. 2. On Medicare.gov, use the Medigap policy search for your Cape Coral ZIP code to see the insurers offering that letter. 3. Ask each insurer three questions: What pricing method do you use? What have your rate increases looked like in Florida over the last several years? Do you offer a household discount? 4. Confirm whether you are in your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a guaranteed-issue situation. If not, ask about underwriting before you apply. 5. Call Florida SHINE, Florida's free State Health Insurance Assistance Program, for one-on-one help. Their counselors do not sell insurance.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is Plan G better at one insurer than another?
No. The benefits inside Plan G are set by federal law and are identical at every insurer that sells it. What differs is the premium, how the insurer prices the plan over time, discounts, customer service and underwriting practices outside your open enrollment window.
Can a Cape Coral resident buy Plan F today?
Only if you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. People who became eligible on or after that date cannot buy Plan C or Plan F, but they can buy Plan G, which is very similar except that it does not cover the Part B deductible.
When can I switch Medigap insurers without answering health questions?
Generally during your one-time six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period at age 65, or during certain guaranteed-issue situations set by federal law. Outside those windows, most Florida insurers can use medical underwriting, and approval is not guaranteed.
Where can I get unbiased help comparing insurers?
Start with Medicare.gov's Medigap policy search, call 1-800-MEDICARE, or contact Florida SHINE, the state's free counseling program. They can walk through the differences without trying to sell you a policy. ## Where to go next For official plan information, visit Medicare.gov and use the Medigap policy search for your Cape Coral ZIP code. Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with any questions. For free local help from trained counselors, contact Florida SHINE, the state's SHIP program. Rate filings and consumer guides are available through the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation and the Florida Department of Financial Services.
