Key takeaways

  • Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7, giving people on Oahu a chance to review, switch, or drop their coverage for 2026.
  • Any changes made during this window take effect on January 1, 2026, and coverage renews automatically if no changes are made.
  • The Part D out-of-pocket cap for prescription drugs is rising to $2,100 in 2026, up from $2,000 in 2025.
  • Plan availability, provider networks, formularies, and costs can change each year, so it helps to read your Annual Notice of Change, list your prescriptions and doctors, and compare total yearly costs before deciding.

That single number affects how a lot of Waipahu households should think about their drug plan this fall.

What the Annual Enrollment Period actually lets you do

Between October 15 and December 7, you can:

Any change you make now takes effect January 1, 2026. If you're happy with your current coverage and it's still being offered next year, you don't have to do anything — your plan renews automatically.

Why 2026 is worth a closer look

A few program-wide updates are shaping decisions this season:

What Waipahu residents can expect locally

Waipahu is in Honolulu County, where Medicare Advantage and Part D plan availability is set at the county level — not by ZIP code or neighborhood. When you use the Plan Finder at medicare.gov and enter your Waipahu ZIP (96797), you'll see the plans available across the county.

Availability, provider networks, formularies (the list of drugs a plan covers), and cost-sharing can all shift from one year to the next. Even if your plan's name is the same in January, the details underneath it may not be.

How to actually decide — a short checklist

Instead of comparing every plan side by side, work backwards from your own situation:

1. Read your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). Your current plan mailed or emailed this in September. It spells out what's changing for 2026. 2. List your prescriptions. Include dosages. Small formulary changes can mean big cost differences. 3. List your doctors and preferred facilities. If you use providers in the Leeward or Pali Momi networks, confirm they're still in-network for any plan you're considering. 4. Think about travel. If you spend part of the year on the mainland or neighbor islands, ask whether the plan covers care outside Oahu. 5. Check the star rating. CMS rates plans 1 to 5 stars on quality and service. It's one input, not the whole answer. 6. Compare total yearly cost — premium + deductible + expected drug and doctor costs — not just the premium.

Frequently asked questions

What if I miss the December 7 deadline?
For most people, you'll be locked into your current coverage for 2026. There's a second window — the **Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, January 1 to March 31** — but it's narrower. If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to another one or return to Original Medicare (and add a Part D plan). It doesn't let people on Original Medicare join a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time.
Do I need to re-enroll every year?
No. If you don't make a change, your current plan generally renews for the next year. But that's exactly why reading the ANOC matters — you might be renewing into a plan whose costs or drug list have shifted.
I take insulin. Does the $2,100 cap change anything for me?
The $35-per-month cap on covered insulin under Part D remains in place. The $2,100 cap is the overall ceiling on what you pay out of pocket for all covered Part D drugs in 2026.
