- Nevada SHIP offers free, unbiased Medicare counseling and can be reached at 1-800-307-4444 or adsd.nv.gov.
- Licensed agents can also help you enroll in Medicare Advantage or Part D plans, but they are paid by insurance companies, so it's worth asking which carriers they represent.
- The Annual Enrollment Period runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, and plan choices for Medicare Advantage and Part D are set at the county level.
- Star ratings from CMS show customer service and care quality on a 1-to-5 scale, but they don't replace checking if your doctors and drugs are covered.
Las Vegas seniors have real questions — and real local help
Whether you're turning 65, moving to Nevada, or reviewing coverage during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7), here's where to turn.
Start with Nevada SHIP — free, unbiased counseling
Every state has a State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). In Nevada, it's called Nevada SHIP, and it's run through the Aging and Disability Services Division. SHIP counselors don't sell insurance. They don't earn commissions. Their job is to help you understand your Medicare choices, plain and simple.
You can reach Nevada SHIP by calling 1-800-307-4444, or visit adsd.nv.gov to find local counselors serving Clark County.
SHIP counselors can help you:
- Understand Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Part D
- Compare plans on Medicare.gov's Plan Finder
- Review your current coverage during AEP
- Check if you qualify for programs like Extra Help or the Medicare Savings Program
- Sort out billing questions or denials
What a licensed agent or agency does differently
Licensed insurance agents in Las Vegas can also help you enroll in Medicare Advantage or Part D plans. Unlike SHIP, agents are paid by the insurance companies whose plans they represent. That's not a bad thing — it just means their role is different.
A good agent will:
- Confirm your doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions
- Explain plan differences without pressure
- Help you enroll and answer questions after the sale
Before meeting with an agent, ask which carriers they represent. Some work with many; some work with just a few. Both SHIP and a licensed agent are valid paths — many people use both.
What's actually available in Clark County
Because Medicare Advantage and Part D plan availability is set at the county level, here's the local snapshot for Clark County, drawn from CMS's 2026 Medicare Advantage and Part D Landscape files:
- 74 Medicare Advantage plans available
- 12 carriers offering Medicare Advantage with prescription drug coverage
- Stand-alone Part D plans are also offered nationwide for those on Original Medicare
That's a lot of choices, which is exactly why unbiased help matters.
Key 2026 numbers to know before you shop
A few program-wide changes take effect in 2026 that apply no matter which plan you choose:
- Part D out-of-pocket cap: $2,100 for the year. Once you hit it, you pay $0 for covered drugs the rest of the year.
- Part D maximum deductible: $615.
- Coverage gap ("donut hole"): eliminated as of 2025 — Part D now has three phases.
- Medicare Prescription Payment Plan: an optional way to spread your drug costs into monthly payments instead of paying a big bill at the pharmacy.
- IRMAA: higher-income surcharges start above $109,000 (single filer) in 2026.
Star Ratings, briefly
You may see plans described with "star ratings" from CMS. These measure things like customer service and care quality on a 1-to-5 scale. They're one tool among many — not a substitute for checking whether your doctors and drugs are covered. A SHIP counselor can walk you through what the ratings do and don't tell you.
Mark these dates on your calendar
- Oct. 15 – Dec. 7: Annual Enrollment Period. Join, switch, or drop Medicare Advantage or Part D plans.
- Jan. 1 – March 31: Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment. If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you get one chance to switch or return to Original Medicare.
