Medicare Supplement
Before You Pick a Medigap Plan G in Newark, Read This
If you are turning 65 in Newark or moving from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare, you have probably heard the phrase "Medigap Plan G" or "Plan N" tossed around like it means one product. It does not. A Medigap plan letter is a coverage standard set by federal law, but the insurer behind that letter chooses the price, the way that price will change over time, whether spouses get a discount, and whether you have to answer health questions to get in. Two Plan G policies from two different companies in New Jersey cover the exact same things — but the experience of owning them can be very different.

Key takeaways
- Every Medigap plan letter is standardized, so Plan G (or any other letter) covers the same benefits no matter which insurer sells it in New Jersey.
- Insurers differ on pricing method (attained-age, issue-age, or community-rated), rate history, household discounts, and whether they use medical underwriting.
- New Jersey does not publish a single public insurer list here, so use the Medicare.gov Medigap policy search by ZIP code and the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance rate guide to see who sells in Newark.
- People newly eligible for Medicare can buy Plans A, B, D, G, G-HD, K, L, M, or N; Plans C and F are only for people eligible before January 1, 2020.
Here is how to compare insurers fairly in Essex County without getting lost.
Same letter, same coverage — everywhere
Federal law says that a Medigap Plan G from Company A pays the same share of your Part A and Part B costs as a Plan G from Company B. The benefit chart does not change by insurer or by ZIP code. That means when you compare Medigap options in Newark, you are not comparing benefits. You are comparing four other things: how the insurer prices the policy, how its rates have moved over time, what discounts it offers, and how it decides whether to accept you.
The letters available to people newly eligible for Medicare today are A, B, D, G, G-HD (high-deductible G), K, L, M, and N. Plans C and F are closed to anyone who became eligible on or after January 1, 2020.
Pricing method: the biggest hidden difference
Insurers use one of three pricing methods, and it matters as much as the sticker price:
- Attained-age rated. The premium is based on your current age and typically goes up as you get older. It often looks cheapest at 65 and rises steadily.
- Issue-age rated. The premium is based on the age you were when you bought the policy. It does not rise just because you had a birthday, though it can still go up for inflation and claims.
- Community-rated. Everyone in the state who has that policy pays the same base rate regardless of age. A 65-year-old and an 80-year-old pay the same starting figure.
None of these methods is universally better. Attained-age policies can be less expensive early and more expensive later; community-rated policies flatten that curve. Ask any insurer selling in Newark which method they use before you compare anything else.
Rate history: what has this insurer actually done?
A quoted premium is a snapshot. What you really want to know is how that premium has changed over the past several years. New Jersey's Department of Banking and Insurance publishes rate filings and consumer guides that show approved rate changes by company. Reviewing three to five years of rate history for the same plan letter tells you far more than a single quote.
If two insurers offer Plan N and one has raised rates modestly each year while the other has taken larger increases, that pattern is worth knowing before you commit.
Household and other discounts
Many Medigap insurers in New Jersey offer a household discount when two adults in the same home are enrolled, and sometimes even when a spouse or partner simply lives with you (they do not always both need to be policyholders). The size and rules vary by company. Some also offer discounts for paying annually, using electronic funds transfer, or being a non-smoker. Ask each insurer plainly: "What discounts apply to me, and do they stay in place at renewal?"
Underwriting: when can they say no?
This is where timing matters most. During your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period — which starts the month you are 65 or older AND enrolled in Part B — insurers in New Jersey must sell you any Medigap plan they offer, at their standard rate, regardless of your health. That is called guaranteed issue.
Outside that window, most insurers can use medical underwriting: they can ask health questions, review prescriptions, and decline you or charge more. A few situations (like losing other coverage involuntarily) also give you guaranteed-issue rights. If you are past your open enrollment window, ask each insurer what its underwriting looks like — some are stricter than others, and that alone can decide who is actually available to you.
How to find who sells Medigap in Newark
There is no single published roster of every Medigap insurer for New Jersey that we can list here. Instead, use these free, official tools:
- Medicare.gov Medigap policy search. Enter your Newark ZIP code at medicare.gov to see the insurers licensed to sell each plan letter in your area, along with their contact information.
- New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance. The state publishes a Medigap consumer rate guide showing approved insurers and rate information. Search "NJ DOBI Medigap" or call the department directly.
- New Jersey SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program). SHIP counselors give free, unbiased help comparing Medigap options. They do not sell insurance and do not earn commissions.
Newark is in Essex County, and the insurers listed through those tools will be the ones licensed to sell to you.
Putting it together: a fair comparison
When you call or quote insurers, ask each one the same questions in the same order:
1. Which plan letters do you offer to someone in my ZIP code? 2. Is the plan attained-age, issue-age, or community-rated? 3. What have your rate changes looked like for this plan letter over the last three to five years? 4. What discounts apply to me, and are they guaranteed at renewal? 5. Am I in a guaranteed-issue period, or will I need to answer health questions?
That checklist cuts through the marketing and gives you an apples-to-apples view.
