Yonkers Medigap in 2027: how plan letters, the Part B reset and rate filings work
YONKERS, N.Y. — If you have a Medigap policy in Yonkers, or you are shopping for one, the next few months are the stretch of the year when the pieces move. New Medigap rate filings work their way through the New York State Department of Financial Services, the Part B deductible that Plans G and N are built around resets on January 1, and the list of plan letters newer Medicare enrollees can buy stays narrower than the list longtime beneficiaries remember. None of that is a crisis — but it is the moment to read your renewal notice carefully.

- People newly eligible for Medicare can buy Plans A, B, D, G, G-HD, K, L, M and N; Plans C and F are limited to people eligible before January 1, 2020.
- The Part B deductible resets every January 1, which matters because Plans G and N are designed around it.
- Medigap rate changes are filed with the New York State Department of Financial Services; you can look up filings there before you renew or switch.
- New York gives Medigap applicants stronger year-round protections than most states, so ask your local SHIP (HIICAP) before you drop a policy.
Yonkers is in Westchester County, and Medigap in New York works a little differently than in most states. Here is what is actually changing for 2027, and what is staying the same.
Which plan letters you can actually buy
Medigap plans are standardized by letter, which means a Plan G from one carrier covers the same medical benefits as a Plan G from another. What differs is the price and the company behind it.
If you became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020, the letters open to you are A, B, D, G, G-HD, K, L, M and N. Plans C and F are closed to newer enrollees because they paid the Part B deductible for you, and federal law no longer allows new Medigap sales that do that. If you were eligible before 2020 and already have a C or F, you can keep it.
The table below lists every carrier selling Medigap in New York and the letters each one offers.
The Part B deductible reset — why Plans G and N care
Plans G and N are the two letters most new enrollees compare, and both are built around the Part B deductible. You pay that deductible once each calendar year before Medicare starts paying its share of doctor and outpatient bills; your Medigap plan then picks up the Part B coinsurance (Plan N also leaves you with small copays for some office and ER visits).
Every January 1, that deductible resets. Medicare announces the new figure each fall for the following year, and it is posted on medicare.gov under Medicare costs. If you are budgeting for 2027, that reset — not your Medigap premium alone — is the first out-of-pocket number to pencil in.
Rate-adjustment season in New York
Medigap premiums are not set by Medicare. In New York, insurers file proposed rate changes with the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS), and DFS reviews them before they take effect. Filings and decisions are public.
If your renewal letter shows a change you did not expect, two things are worth doing:
1. Look up your carrier's filing on the DFS website to see what was requested and approved. 2. Call New York's SHIP — here it is called HIICAP (the Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program) — for a free, unbiased walkthrough.
Because Medigap benefits are standardized by letter, comparing a Plan G to a Plan G across carriers is a fair apples-to-apples comparison of price and service.
Insurers entering or leaving
The carriers currently selling Medigap policies to New Yorkers are AARP – UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company of New York, BANKERS CONSECO LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY, BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York, EmblemHealth Services Company, Globe Life Insurance Company of New York, Humana (Humana Insurance Company of New York), Mutual of Omaha (Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company), and Univera Healthcare West New York. Not every carrier sells every letter — the table on this page shows which letters each one offers.
Carrier lineups can shift year to year as companies file to enter or exit the New York market. Before you assume your current insurer will still offer your plan letter in 2027, check medicare.gov's Medigap policy search for a ZIP code in Yonkers, or ask HIICAP.
New York's switching rules are unusually friendly
In most states, once your six-month Medigap open enrollment window closes, an insurer can turn you down or charge you more based on your health if you try to switch. New York is different. State law gives Medigap applicants stronger year-round guaranteed-issue and community-rating protections, which means you generally cannot be denied a policy or charged a higher premium because of your health.
That is a real advantage — but it does not mean every switch is a good idea. Before you drop a policy, confirm the new one is in place and that any waiting-period rules for pre-existing conditions have been explained to you in writing.
How to decide, step by step
- Read your annual renewal notice as soon as it arrives and note any premium change.
- Decide which plan letter fits your situation — most newly eligible shoppers compare G, G-HD and N.
- Use medicare.gov's Medigap policy search to see every carrier offering that letter to a Yonkers ZIP code.
- Check the DFS site for the carrier's most recent rate filing.
- Call HIICAP or 1-800-MEDICARE if anything is unclear before you sign.
