Medicare in Allentown: Two Paths, One 2026 Choice

They sound like flavors of the same thing. They aren't. They're two different ways of using Medicare, and understanding the structure is the first step toward a decision you'll feel good about.

- Original Medicare (Part A and B) lets you see almost any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, with no network.
- Medigap is a private policy that helps cover costs Original Medicare leaves behind, like coinsurance and hospital deductibles.
- Medicare Advantage plans are run by private companies, must cover everything Original Medicare covers, often bundle Part D drug coverage, and may include extras like dental, vision, or hearing, but usually require staying in-network or getting referrals.
- In Lehigh County (Allentown), which specific Medicare Advantage plans are available is set at the county level and updated each year, so you should check the Plan Finder at medicare.gov for your ZIP code.
ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Two roads, one Medicare
Here's a plain-English look at how the two paths actually work, plus the 2026 rules that apply no matter which one you pick.
Path 1: Original Medicare + a Medigap policy
Original Medicare is the federal program itself — Part A (hospital) and Part B (doctor and outpatient). You can go to almost any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare. There's no network.
But Original Medicare alone doesn't cap what you can owe out of pocket. That's where Medigap (also called Medicare Supplement) comes in. Medigap is a private policy that helps pay some of the costs Original Medicare leaves behind — things like coinsurance and hospital deductibles.
A few things to know:
- Medigap does not include prescription drug coverage. You'd add a stand-alone Part D plan for that.
- Medigap policies are standardized by letter (Plan G, Plan N, and so on), so the benefits inside "Plan G" are the same from company to company, though prices differ.
- Your best window to buy Medigap without medical underwriting is your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts when you're 65 and enrolled in Part B.
Path 2: Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Medicare Advantage is a different structure. Instead of using Original Medicare directly, you enroll in a private plan that Medicare pays to handle your coverage. These plans must cover everything Original Medicare covers, and most bundle in Part D drug coverage. Many include extras like dental, vision, or hearing.
The trade-off is usually the network. Medicare Advantage plans are often HMOs or PPOs, so you may need to stay in-network or get referrals. They also set their own copays and yearly out-of-pocket maximums.
Availability is local. Allentown is in Lehigh County, where the specific plans offered are set at the county level and refreshed each year. You can compare what's available in your ZIP code using the Plan Finder at medicare.gov.
What's the same on both paths in 2026
No matter which road you take, some 2026 rules apply across the board:
- Part D out-of-pocket cap: $2,100. Once your covered drug costs hit that ceiling, you pay $0 for covered drugs the rest of the year.
- Part D maximum deductible: $615.
- The coverage gap (the old "donut hole") is gone. Part D now has three phases instead of four.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread your drug costs across the calendar year in monthly installments instead of paying big amounts at the pharmacy counter. It's optional and free to opt in.
- IRMAA — the higher-income surcharge on Part B and Part D — begins above $109,000 in income for a single filer in 2026.
The enrollment windows to circle
- Annual Enrollment Period: October 15 – December 7. This is when anyone with Medicare can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan for the following year.
- Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: January 1 – March 31. If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you get one chance to switch to a different Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare.
- Medigap doesn't follow the same calendar. Outside your initial six-month window, insurers in many states can ask health questions before selling you a policy — so timing matters.
How to think about the choice
There's no universal winner. The honest question is which structure fits your life:
- Do you travel often or split time between states? Original Medicare's nationwide access may matter more.
- Do you prefer predictable monthly premiums and fewer surprise bills? A Medigap-style setup leans that direction.
- Do you like the idea of bundled coverage with extras, and are you comfortable with a network? Medicare Advantage is built around that model.
- What prescriptions do you take, and which plans in Lehigh County cover them well?
