Short answer

Covered: Part B

Yes, Medicare Part B covers arm, leg, back and neck braces when they're medically necessary and a doctor or other health care provider orders them.

In 2026, you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for a covered brace after you meet the $283 Medicare Part B deductible.

Medicare requires prior authorization for certain knee and back braces, a review that confirms Medicare's coverage rules are met before the supplier delivers the brace.

Which braces does Medicare cover?

Medicare Part B covers arm, leg, back and neck braces when they're medically necessary and a doctor or other health care provider orders them. Braces are rigid and semi-rigid devices that help support weak or deformed body parts, or stop the movement of an injured body part.

Medicare's equipment booklet lists braces with prosthetic and orthotic items, the group of Part B benefits that also includes artificial limbs. See Does Medicare cover prosthetics?.

Does Medicare cover knee braces and back braces?

Yes, as leg and back braces, when they're medically necessary and ordered by your doctor or other health care provider. Some braces need prior authorization: CMS keeps a list of equipment and supplies that need approval before Medicare pays, and it includes certain knee braces (knee orthoses) and back braces (lumbar-sacral orthoses). Prior authorization helps suppliers make sure Medicare's coverage, payment and coding rules are met before an item is delivered.

What do I pay for a brace?

After you meet the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for a covered brace. Medicare's equipment booklet says these amounts may be different if the supplier doesn't accept assignment.

A supplier that accepts assignment agrees to charge you only the Medicare deductible and coinsurance and must send the claim to Medicare. A supplier that doesn't accept assignment can charge more than the Medicare-approved amount, and Medicare.gov notes that the usual cap on that extra charge doesn't apply to some supplies and durable medical equipment, so your costs could be higher.

How do I get a brace Medicare will pay for?

Start with your doctor or other health care provider, who must order the brace. Medicare's equipment booklet suggests asking a supplier these questions before you get an item:

  • Are you a Medicare-enrolled supplier?
  • Do you accept assignment?
  • If you don't accept assignment, will you consider it in my case?
  • Will you bill Medicare for me?

Does Medicare Advantage or Medigap change this?

Medicare Advantage plans cover almost all medically necessary services Original Medicare covers, and some offer extra benefits; network rules, suppliers and costs vary by plan, so check with the plan before you get a brace. See What is the difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage?.

If you have Original Medicare with a Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance) policy, Medicare's equipment booklet says the Medigap policy may help cover some of the costs of prosthetic and orthotic items like braces.

Does Medicare cover orthopedic shoes with a leg brace?

Yes. Medicare Part B covers orthopedic shoes if they're a necessary part of a leg brace, and only if your doctors and suppliers are enrolled in Medicare. See Does Medicare cover orthopedic shoes?.
