What does Medicare caregiver training teach?
If you're a caregiver of a person with Medicare, the training teaches you skills you need to help your patient or loved one follow their treatment plan, including how to:
- Give medications
- Help with daily tasks
- Move the patient safely
- Communicate effectively with the patient
- Better understand and manage the patient's medical conditions
- Give personalized care and emotional support
- Prevent bedsores and infections, and care for wounds
Who qualifies for Medicare caregiver training?
A health care provider must determine that caregiver training is appropriate for the patient's treatment plan. Caregivers are eligible if both of these conditions apply:
- The training focuses on helping the patient meet the health and treatment goals they set with their doctor or other health care provider.
- The patient needs a caregiver's help for their treatment to succeed.
Who can provide caregiver training?
Caregivers can get this training from Medicare providers, including:
- Doctors
- Nurse practitioners
- Clinical nurse specialists
- Certified nurse-midwives
- Physician assistants
- Clinical psychologists
- Therapists, including physical and occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists
What does caregiver training cost with Medicare?
After the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. What you owe can also depend on other insurance you have, how much the provider charges, whether the provider accepts assignment, the type of facility and where you get the service.
Can caregiver training be done by telehealth?
Yes. Caregiver training services are among the telehealth services Medicare.gov lists as covered. Through December 31, 2027, Medicare covers telehealth services that you can get from anywhere in the U.S., including your home, and for most telehealth services you pay the same amount you would pay in person. See how Medicare covers telehealth.
What other Medicare services support caregivers?
Medicare may cover caregiver training services as part of a partial hospitalization program for mental health care. During a Medicare-covered cognitive assessment, the patient's provider may identify social supports, including care the usual caregiver can provide, and the caregiver can come along to help listen and answer questions.
For people living with dementia and their unpaid caregivers, the Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE) Model, a CMS pilot program, requires participating providers to offer caregiver training and support services and connections to community-based resources.
