Short answer

If your Medicare Advantage plan won't be offered in your area for 2027, the plan must tell you in writing, and you can choose new coverage during Annual Enrollment (October 15 to December 7, 2026) or in a Special Enrollment Period that runs through the end of February 2027.

If you don't choose, you'll have Original Medicare from January 1, 2027, but no Medicare drug coverage unless you join a Part D plan.

You also get a guaranteed right to buy certain Medigap policies, applying no more than 63 days after your plan coverage ends.

How do I know if my plan is leaving?

Your plan must send a non-renewal letter in the fall saying it won't be offered in your area next year, and your Annual Notice of Change will say so too. Nationally, the CMS plan files for 2027 show 1,116 new, 1,150 leaving, 1,632 changing, each plan counted once. See how many plans are leaving, changing or new in your state and county.

What are my options?

  • Choose another Medicare Advantage plan offered in your area.
  • Return to Original Medicare and join a stand-alone Part D drug plan, and, if you want, buy a Medigap policy using your guaranteed issue right.
  • Do nothing: you'll be in Original Medicare on January 1, 2027, with no drug coverage until you join a Part D plan.

How long do I have to choose?

You can use Annual Enrollment (October 15 to December 7, 2026) for coverage that starts January 1, 2027, with no gap. Your Special Enrollment Period then runs through the end of February 2027; a plan chosen after December 7 starts the first of the month after you join, so choosing by December 7 avoids a gap in drug coverage.

Can I buy a Medigap policy?

Yes. When your plan leaves Medicare or your area, you have a guaranteed issue right to buy Medigap Plan A, B, C, D, F, G, K or L sold in your state (C and F only if you were eligible for Medicare before 2020), without health questions. Apply no more than 63 days after your plan coverage ends, and keep the plan's letter as proof.

What should I check in a new plan?

Whether your doctors and hospitals are in its network, whether your drugs are on its list, and its total costs. A 6-step checklist.

More questions people ask

Will I lose my Medicare if my plan leaves?
No. You keep Medicare. If you don't pick a new plan you'll have Original Medicare from January 1, 2027, but you'll need to join a Part D plan for drug coverage.
Is my plan leaving the same as my doctor leaving the network?
No. A doctor leaving a plan's network doesn't give you a Special Enrollment Period in most cases; your plan leaving your area does.
How many Medicare Advantage plans are leaving in my state?
The state plan-change pages on this site count the plans leaving, changing and new in every state and county, from the CMS Landscape files.
