Key takeaways
- The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31 and is only for people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
- You can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or drop back to Original Medicare (and add a Part D drug plan) — but you can only make one change during this window.
- If you miss March 31, your next regular chance to switch is the fall Annual Enrollment Period, October 15 through December 7, with changes taking effect January 1.
- South Bend is in St. Joseph County, where Medicare plan choices are set at the county level; medicare.gov and Indiana's SHIP can walk you through what's available.
This window is narrower than the fall enrollment period most people know about, and the rules for what you can and can't do are different. Here's how the dates line up for South Bend residents this season.
Who this window is actually for
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period — MA OEP for short — is only for people who are already in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1. If you're on Original Medicare (Parts A and B) with or without a stand-alone Part D drug plan, this window does not apply to you. You'd need to wait for a different enrollment period or qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
That distinction matters. A lot of folks assume "open enrollment" means anyone can jump in. During January through March, it doesn't.
What you can change between Jan. 1 and March 31
If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan, you have two options during this window:
- Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage).
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and go back to Original Medicare. If you do that, you can also join a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan.
You get one change during this window — not unlimited swaps. Pick carefully. Your new coverage generally starts the first day of the month after the plan gets your request.
What you cannot do in this window
The MA OEP is not a do-everything period. During January through March, you cannot:
- Join a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time if you're currently on Original Medicare.
- Switch from one stand-alone Part D drug plan to another if you're on Original Medicare.
- Enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan if you don't already have drug coverage through Medicare Advantage.
Those moves are reserved for the fall Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) or a Special Enrollment Period if you qualify.
What happens if you miss March 31
If March 31 comes and goes and you're stuck in a plan that doesn't fit, your standard next chance is the Annual Enrollment Period in the fall — October 15 through December 7 — with any changes taking effect January 1 of the following year. That's a long time to wait if your prescriptions aren't covered the way you expected or your doctor left the network.
There are exceptions. Special Enrollment Periods can open up if you move out of your plan's service area, lose other coverage, qualify for Extra Help or Medicaid, or experience certain other life changes. If you think one of these applies to you, call 1-800-MEDICARE or contact Indiana's State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) before you assume you're locked in.
How the dates fit together
It helps to picture the Medicare year in three stretches:
- Oct. 15 – Dec. 7 (Annual Enrollment Period): Anyone with Medicare can make changes for the following year. This is the "big" window.
- Jan. 1 – March 31 (Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period): A second-chance window for people already in a Medicare Advantage plan.
- Rest of the year: Changes generally require a Special Enrollment Period.
Keep a few program-level figures in mind as you weigh a change: the Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 in 2026 and $2,400 in 2027, and the Part D maximum deductible is $615 in 2026 and $700 in 2027. The coverage gap (the old "donut hole") is gone — Part D now has three phases. Medicare also offers the optional Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, which lets you spread drug costs across the year in monthly payments instead of paying at the pharmacy counter.
Getting local help in South Bend
South Bend is in St. Joseph County, where the specific set of Medicare Advantage and Part D plans available is determined at the county level. Before you switch, it's worth confirming that your doctors, hospitals and prescriptions fit the plan you're considering.
