NEW ORLEANS — This fall, a small number of people on Medicare Advantage in Orleans Parish are opening a letter they weren't expecting: a notice that their plan will not be offered in 2027. Ten Medicare Advantage plans sold in the parish this year are not on CMS's 2027 list for the area, and the carriers that run them are required to tell every affected member in writing before the Annual Enrollment Period.
If you're one of those members, you have time, you have options, and you have a special window to use that most people don't get. Here is what the letter means, what happens if you do nothing, and what you can do between now and the end of February 2027.
How do I know if my Medicare Advantage plan is leaving New Orleans for 2027?
Your plan has to tell you in writing. By law, carriers mail a non-renewal notice (sometimes called a "plan non-renewal letter") to every member of a plan that will not be offered the following year. These letters go out before the Annual Enrollment Period, which runs October 15 through December 7, 2026.
Open any mail from your current insurer this fall. The letter will say your plan is being discontinued as of December 31, 2026, and will explain your right to a Special Enrollment Period. If you are not sure whether a letter applies to you, call the member services number on your plan card.
Which Medicare Advantage plans are not returning in Orleans Parish for 2027?
Ten plans sold in Orleans Parish for 2026 are not on CMS's 2027 Landscape file for the county. Listed in alphabetical order by carrier:
- Aetna Medicare Dual Care (PPO D-SNP) — Aetna (CVS Health)
- Blue adVantage Giveback (HMO-POS) — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana
- Wellcare Dual Access (HMO-POS D-SNP) — Centene (WellCare)
- Wellcare Dual Liberty (HMO-POS D-SNP) — Centene (WellCare)
- Healthy Blue Dual Advantage (HMO D-SNP) — Elevance Health (Anthem)
- Peoples Health Choices (PPO) — UnitedHealthcare
- Peoples Health Dual Complete LA-S5 (HMO-POS D-SNP) — UnitedHealthcare
- Peoples Health Patriot (PPO) — UnitedHealthcare
- Peoples Health Secure Complete (HMO-POS D-SNP) — UnitedHealthcare
- Peoples Health Secure Health (HMO-POS D-SNP) — UnitedHealthcare
If your plan is not on this list, it is expected to be offered again in 2027, though some details may change. Read the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) your plan sends every fall; it lists what is different for next year.
What happens on January 1, 2027, if I do nothing?
You go back to Original Medicare — Part A (hospital) and Part B (doctor). You will not be enrolled in any Medicare Advantage plan, and you will not have a Medicare Part D drug plan attached. You can still see any provider in the country who accepts Medicare, and your Part A and Part B cards keep working.
Two things to know. First, Original Medicare does not include drug coverage, so if you take prescriptions you'll want to pick a stand-alone Part D plan to avoid a gap in coverage and a possible late-enrollment penalty down the road. Second, Original Medicare has no yearly out-of-pocket limit, which is why many people pair it with a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policy.
What is the Special Enrollment Period for a non-renewed plan?
Because your plan is leaving the market, Medicare gives you a Special Enrollment Period that runs from December 8, 2026, through February 28, 2027. During that window you can:
- Join a different Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage), or
- Stay in Original Medicare and join a stand-alone Part D drug plan.
This is on top of the regular Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7, 2026), so if you make a choice during AEP that takes effect January 1, 2027, you don't have to wait.
You may also qualify for a guaranteed-issue right to buy certain Medigap policies without medical underwriting because your Medicare Advantage plan is being discontinued. Guaranteed-issue is a federal protection, but Medigap rules vary by state. For Louisiana specifics, contact the Louisiana Department of Insurance before you buy.
How many Medicare Advantage plans will be offered in Orleans Parish for 2027?
CMS's 2027 Landscape file shows 67 Medicare Advantage plans from 9 carriers available in Orleans Parish next year, compared with 65 plans from 8 carriers in 2026. Beyond the 10 plans not returning, 12 plans are new and 11 existing plans have been renamed; your ANOC will tell you if your plan is one of the renamed ones.
The full roster of 2027 plans is shown in the table on this page. To compare specific premiums, deductibles, copays, drug lists and provider networks for any plan, use the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 1-877-486-2048), which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
What should I do this fall if my plan is on the list?
A short checklist:
1. Keep the non-renewal letter. It is proof of your Special Enrollment Period if you need to show it. 2. Make a list of the doctors, hospitals and pharmacies you use, and the prescriptions you take with dose and quantity. 3. Compare 2027 plans on medicare.gov's Plan Finder, or call 1-800-MEDICARE. Enter your ZIP code and your drug list — the results are personalized. 4. If you are thinking about Original Medicare plus a Medigap and a Part D plan, call the Louisiana Department of Insurance to confirm what Medigap rights apply to you. 5. Pick before December 7, 2026, if you want coverage in place on January 1. If you need more time, your Special Enrollment Period runs through February 28, 2027.
A quick note on Part D costs for 2027: CMS has confirmed the Part D out-of-pocket cap will be $2,400 (up from $2,100 in 2026) and the maximum Part D deductible will be $700 (up from $615 in 2026). The 2027 Part B premium and deductible, and the 2027 IRMAA income brackets, are usually announced by CMS in November.
