HONOLULU — If you opened a letter this fall from your Medicare Advantage plan that used the words "non-renewal" or "will not be offered in 2027," you are not alone. In Honolulu County, four Medicare Advantage plans listed for 2026 are not in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) 2027 lineup. Members of those plans have a protected window to pick something new, and knowing the deadlines now makes the choice easier.
Which Medicare Advantage plans are not returning in Honolulu for 2027?
Four plans offered in Honolulu County in 2026 are not in the CMS 2027 file for the county. Listed alphabetically by carrier, they are:
- AlohaCare Advantage (HMO D-SNP) — AlohaCare
- Wellcare 'Ohana Dual Align (HMO-POS D-SNP) — Centene (WellCare)
- HMSA Akamai Advantage Complete Plus (PPO) — HMSA Akamai Advantage
- UHC Dual Complete HI-S001 (PPO D-SNP) — UnitedHealthcare
Honolulu is in Honolulu County, where plan availability is set at the county level. For 2027, CMS shows 29 Medicare Advantage plans from 7 carriers available in the county, with some new plans and some renamed ones. The table on this page lists every plan.
How do I tell if my plan is ending?
Your plan has to tell you in writing. By law, if a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan will not be offered next year, the carrier mails a non-renewal notice (sometimes called a plan termination letter) in early October. The letter will say the plan will end on December 31, 2026, and that you will need to make a choice to keep Medicare Advantage or drug coverage.
Check the plan name on your member ID card against the four names above. Spelling and plan type (HMO, HMO-POS, PPO, D-SNP) matter — a carrier can keep offering most of its lineup while retiring one specific plan.
What happens in Honolulu if I do nothing?
If your Medicare Advantage plan ends on December 31, 2026, and you do not pick a new plan, you are automatically returned to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) on January 1, 2027. You will still have Medicare — but you will not have a Medicare Advantage plan, and you will not have Part D drug coverage unless you enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan.
That gap matters. Without Part D, prescription costs are paid out of pocket, and signing up later can bring a late enrollment penalty.
What are my choices and when do I have to decide?
You have three main paths if your plan is on the non-renewal list:
1. Pick a new Medicare Advantage plan offered in Honolulu County for 2027. You can compare the 29 plans in the county on the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov. 2. Stay with Original Medicare and add a stand-alone Part D plan for drug coverage. 3. Stay with Original Medicare, add a Part D plan, and consider a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policy to help with Part A and Part B cost-sharing.
Because your plan is non-renewing, CMS gives you a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that runs from December 8, 2026, through the end of February 2027 to join another Medicare Advantage plan or a stand-alone Part D plan. That is on top of the Annual Enrollment Period of October 15 – December 7, 2026, when any Medicare member can make changes effective January 1, 2027.
You may also have a guaranteed-issue right to buy certain Medigap policies without medical underwriting when your Medicare Advantage plan ends. The exact rules can vary by state, so check with the Hawaii Insurance Division for how guaranteed-issue works in Hawaii.
What 2027 numbers are already set?
A few program-level figures for 2027 have been published by CMS:
- Part D out-of-pocket cap: $2,400 in 2027 (up from $2,100 in 2026).
- Part D maximum deductible: $700 in 2027 (up from $615 in 2026).
- Part D national base beneficiary premium: $41.33 for 2027 (a formula input, not what any plan charges).
The 2027 Part B standard premium and deductible, and the 2027 IRMAA income brackets, have not been announced yet. CMS usually releases those figures in the fall, typically November.
