Key takeaways
- 21 Medicare Advantage plans available in Orange County in 2026 are not being offered in 2027; the full list of plans and carriers appears in the table below.
- If your plan is ending, your carrier must mail a non-renewal letter (the Annual Notice of Change / plan non-renewal notice) by early October 2026 — read it carefully.
- If you do nothing, you'll be moved to Original Medicare (Parts A and B) on Jan. 1, 2027, with no Part D drug coverage unless you add it.
- A Special Enrollment Period lets members of a non-renewing plan switch to another Medicare Advantage or Part D plan from Dec. 8, 2026 through the end of February 2027.
ANAHEIM, Calif. — As the Annual Enrollment Period opens Oct. 15, 2026, thousands of Orange County residents will get a letter from their Medicare Advantage carrier that no one looks forward to: a non-renewal notice. In this county, 21 Medicare Advantage plans offered in 2026 are not being offered in 2027, according to the CMS Medicare Advantage Landscape Source Files. If you're enrolled in one of them, you have time to choose what's next — and a special window that runs past the regular Dec. 7 deadline.
How to tell if your plan is one of the 21
Carriers are required to notify members in writing when a plan is being discontinued. Watch your mail in late September or early October 2026 for an envelope from your insurance company. The letter will say something like "plan non-renewal," "plan termination," or "your plan will not be offered in 2027." It is separate from — or sometimes bundled with — the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) that every member gets each fall.
If you're not sure, you can also:
- Call the member services number on the back of your plan ID card.
- Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Look up your plan at medicare.gov using the Plan Finder.

What happens if you do nothing
If your plan is on the list above and you make no change by Dec. 31, 2026, your Medicare Advantage coverage simply ends on that date. Starting Jan. 1, 2027, you will be back on Original Medicare — Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) — directly through the federal program. You will not automatically be enrolled in another Medicare Advantage plan or in a Part D prescription drug plan.
That matters for two reasons: 1. Original Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage. If you need help with drug costs, you'd want to join a stand-alone Part D plan. 2. Original Medicare has no annual out-of-pocket maximum. Many people pair it with a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy to help cover coinsurance and deductibles.
Your Special Enrollment Period and your options
Because your plan is being discontinued, Medicare gives you a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that is wider than the regular Annual Enrollment Period. You can:
- Pick another Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage) for 2027. You can do this during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7, 2026) for a Jan. 1 start, or use your SEP from Dec. 8, 2026 through the end of February 2027.
- Return to Original Medicare and add a stand-alone Part D plan. The same SEP window applies for joining a Part D plan.
- Consider a Medigap policy. When a Medicare Advantage plan non-renews, federal law gives you a guaranteed-issue right to buy certain Medigap policies within 63 days — meaning insurers can't turn you down or charge more for health reasons. California has its own additional Medigap rules; for state-specific protections, contact the California Department of Insurance.
If you enroll during the Annual Enrollment Period, coverage starts Jan. 1, 2027. If you use the SEP after Jan. 1, your new coverage typically starts the first of the month after you enroll.
A few 2027 figures to keep in mind
Whatever you choose, these program-level numbers apply in 2027:
- Part D out-of-pocket cap: $2,400 in 2027 (up from $2,100 in 2026).
- Part D maximum deductible: $700 in 2027 (up from $615 in 2026).
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan is still available if you'd like to spread drug costs across the year in monthly installments.
The 2027 Part B standard premium and deductible, and the 2027 IRMAA income brackets, had not been announced as of early fall 2026. CMS typically publishes them in November.
