33 New Medicare Advantage Plans in North Carolina for 2027: The List
RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina's Medicare Advantage menu grows again next year. According to the CMS Medicare Advantage Landscape Source Files for 2026 and 2027, 33 of the 179 Medicare Advantage plans offered statewide for 2027 are new — meaning they were not available for 2026. Nine carriers are bringing those new options to the state, and the plans vary widely in how many counties they reach.

Key takeaways
- 33 Medicare Advantage plans are new in North Carolina for 2027, out of 179 total plans offered statewide.
- Nine carriers introduce new plans: Aetna (CVS Health), Alignment Health Plan, Devoted Health, HealthSpring, HealthTeam Advantage, Humana, Provider Partners Health Plans, PruittHealth Premier, and UnitedHealthcare.
- Availability is county by county, so a new plan listed statewide may not be sold where you live — confirm on the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov.
- The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, and choices made during that window take effect January 1, 2027.
Here is what shoppers need to know as the Annual Enrollment Period approaches.
How many plans are new, and who's offering them
For 2027, nine carriers account for the 33 new Medicare Advantage plans in North Carolina:
- Aetna (CVS Health): 3
- Alignment Health Plan: 2
- Devoted Health: 17
- HealthSpring: 1
- HealthTeam Advantage: 1
- Humana: 2
- Provider Partners Health Plans: 2
- PruittHealth Premier: 1
- UnitedHealthcare: 4
Devoted Health is adding the largest number of new plans in the state, with 17. UnitedHealthcare adds four, Aetna (CVS Health) adds three, and Alignment Health Plan, Humana and Provider Partners Health Plans each add two. HealthSpring, HealthTeam Advantage and PruittHealth Premier each add one. The full plan-by-plan list is shown in the table on this page.
The new plans with the widest county reach
Statewide reach varies a lot from plan to plan. The two new plans with the broadest county footprints in North Carolina for 2027, according to the CMS Landscape file, are both from UnitedHealthcare: UHC Dual Complete NC-Q2 (HMO-POS D-SNP) and UHC Dual Complete NC-S3 (HMO-POS D-SNP), each offered in 87 counties under their widest-reach service area entries. (Both plan names also appear with narrower 13-county entries in the same file.)
Humana's two new plans also reach much of the state: HumanaChoice H7617-122 (PPO) is listed in 79 counties, and Humana Gold Plus Giveback H1036-343 (HMO-POS) is listed in 76 counties.
Among Devoted Health's 17 new plans, several — including DEVOTED CORE 029 NC (HMO), DEVOTED GIVEBACK 030 NC (HMO), DEVOTED GIVEBACK EXTRAS 044 NC (HMO) and DEVOTED C-SNP GIVEBACK EXTRAS 034 NC (HMO C-SNP) — reach 18 counties apiece, the widest among that carrier's new entries.
Other new plans have more targeted footprints. HealthSpring Achieve (HMO C-SNP) is offered in 10 counties; the two new Provider Partners North Carolina plans (Community Plan and Essential Plan, both HMO I-SNP) are each in 14 counties; PruittHealth Premier (HMO I-SNP) is in 13 counties; HealthTeam Advantage Thrive Plan (HMO) is in 7 counties; and the Aetna and Alignment Health Plan entries range from 4 to 7 counties. The complete county counts for every new plan appear in the table.
A reminder: county counts describe statewide reach, not whether a plan is sold in your specific county.
What "new" means for a 2027 plan
A plan that is new for 2027 does not yet have a Medicare Star Rating of its own and has no local track record under its current contract and plan ID. That is simply a fact of being new — it is not a judgment about quality one way or the other. Over time, CMS collects the data that goes into Star Ratings. For now, people evaluating a new plan will need to compare it the same way they would any plan: by looking at its own documents and tools, not by relying on a rating that does not exist yet.
Checking whether a new plan is offered in your county — and covers your doctors and drugs
Because Medicare Advantage availability is set county by county, the first question is always local: Is this plan actually sold where I live?
Use these free, official tools:
- Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov — enter your ZIP code and county to see every plan available to you, with full details.
- 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 1-877-486-2048) — available 24/7 to walk through plans with you.
- The plan's own Evidence of Coverage, Summary of Benefits, pharmacy directory, and provider directory — the authoritative source for what a plan covers, which pharmacies are in network, and which doctors and hospitals participate.
If you take specific prescriptions, enter them in Plan Finder to see how each plan handles them. If you want to keep a current doctor or specialist, check that provider's status in the plan's directory and, when possible, confirm with the provider's office directly.
What to do before December 7
The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, 2026. Any Medicare Advantage or Part D choice you make in that window takes effect January 1, 2027. A simple checklist:
1. Make a list of your doctors, hospitals, pharmacies and current prescriptions (names, doses, frequency). 2. Open Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov and enter your ZIP code to see your county's 2027 options. 3. If a new plan interests you, read its Summary of Benefits and Evidence of Coverage before enrolling. 4. Confirm your providers and drugs with the plan directly. 5. Enroll by December 7, 2026, if you decide to change.
If you are happy with your current plan and it is being offered again for 2027, you generally do not need to do anything. Still, carriers can change plan details year to year, so it is worth reviewing your plan's Annual Notice of Change.
