Key takeaways
- The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs from January 1 through March 31 and lets people already in a Medicare Advantage plan make one change if their current plan isn't working out.
- Any change made during this window takes effect on the first day of the following month, and it's separate from the fall Annual Enrollment Period that ended December 7.
- Medicare Advantage plan options are set by county, not by city, so everyone in the same county sees the same plan choices on Medicare.gov.
- Before switching plans, it helps to check if your doctors and prescriptions are covered, and free, unbiased counseling is available through the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), which isn't tied to any insurance company.
Here's a plain-English look at what you can and can't do between now and the end of March, and where Provo-area residents can turn for help.
What the January–March window is for
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (often shortened to MA-OEP) is different from the fall Annual Enrollment Period that ended December 7. It's designed as a do-over — a way to correct a Medicare Advantage choice that isn't working.
According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, during MA-OEP you can:
- Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another Medicare Advantage plan.
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and go back to Original Medicare (Parts A and B).
- If you return to Original Medicare, add a standalone Part D prescription drug plan.
You only get to make one change during this window, and any change you make takes effect the first day of the following month.
What you cannot do during MA-OEP
This window is narrower than the fall one, so it helps to know its limits:
- If you already have Original Medicare, you cannot use MA-OEP to join a Medicare Advantage plan.
- You cannot use it to switch from one standalone Part D drug plan to another (unless you're leaving Medicare Advantage).
- You cannot use it to enroll in a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policy with guaranteed acceptance — those rules are separate, and going back to Original Medicare doesn't always guarantee a Medigap plan will take you without medical underwriting.
That last point is worth a careful read before making any move. Talking with a counselor before you switch can save a lot of second-guessing.
Local snapshot: Provo and Utah County
Provo sits in Utah County, where Medicare Advantage plan availability is set at the county level — not the city level — by CMS. That means every Medicare-eligible resident in Provo, Orem, Lehi, Spanish Fork and the rest of the county sees the same menu of plans on Medicare.gov.
The number of plans and carriers available in Utah County changes each year. The 2027 lineup is detailed in each plan's Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) and on Medicare.gov's Plan Finder, which is the only source that reflects real-time, county-specific availability for your ZIP code.

Why 2027 might change how you feel about your plan
Even if you liked your plan on paper last October, a few program-wide changes taking effect January 1, 2027 are worth watching as you consider whether to switch:
- Part D out-of-pocket cap: In 2026, your prescription drug spending is capped at $2,100 for the year. Once you hit it, you pay $0 for covered drugs the rest of the year.
- Part D deductible: The maximum allowed deductible is $615 for 2026.
- No more donut hole: As of 2025, the coverage gap is gone. Part D now has three phases instead of four.
- Medicare Prescription Payment Plan: You can choose to spread your drug costs into monthly payments instead of paying big amounts at the pharmacy counter. You have to opt in — it isn't automatic.
- IRMAA: Higher-income enrollees pay a surcharge on Parts B and D. For 2026, IRMAA kicks in above $109,000 in income for a single filer (based on your 2024 tax return).
If any of these change how your plan feels in practice — say, your drug costs shake out differently than expected — MA-OEP gives you room to adjust.
How to think through a switch
Before you change anything, ask three practical questions:
1. Are your doctors in the new plan's network? Provo-area residents often use Intermountain Health and MountainStar facilities — check each specific plan's provider directory. 2. Are your prescriptions on the new plan's formulary? Drug lists vary a lot between plans. 3. Would Original Medicare plus a Part D plan (and possibly a Medigap policy) fit you better? This is where a neutral counselor really helps.
