Key takeaways
- The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31, 2027, and lets people already in a Medicare Advantage plan make one change, no reason needed.
- This window is only for those enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1; people on Original Medicare must wait for the fall Annual Enrollment Period (October 15–December 7) or qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
- Allowed changes include switching to a different Medicare Advantage plan, moving to Original Medicare with a stand-alone Part D drug plan, or dropping Part D coverage, and any change starts the first day of the month after the request is received.
- Since Medicare plan availability, networks, and drug lists are set by county and can change yearly, it's worth checking that your doctors are still in-network and your prescriptions are still covered before switching, and free help is available through Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local SHIP.
This is a quieter enrollment window than the fall Annual Enrollment Period, but for Spanish Fork residents who are running into a network problem, a drug coverage surprise, or a plan that just is not working, it can matter a lot.
What this window is — and who it's for
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (often shortened to MA-OEP) runs January 1 to March 31 every year. According to CMS, it is only open to people who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1.
If that describes you, you can use this window once. If you are on Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) with or without a stand-alone Part D drug plan, this window does not apply to you — you'd generally have to wait for the fall Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) or qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
What you can change between Jan. 1 and March 31
During the MA-OEP, you have three main options:
- Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage).
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare.
- If you go back to Original Medicare, join a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan.
You can only make one change during this period. Once it takes effect, that's your move for the window. Any change you make will start the first day of the month after the plan gets your request.
What you cannot do in this window
This is where people get tripped up. The MA-OEP is narrower than fall enrollment. During January through March, you generally cannot:
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time.
- Join a stand-alone Part D drug plan if you are staying on a Medicare Advantage plan.
- Switch from one stand-alone Part D plan to another if you are on Original Medicare.
If you need one of those changes, you'll usually be looking at the next Annual Enrollment Period, or checking whether you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period — for example, if you move, lose other coverage, or become eligible for Extra Help.
Why 2027 makes this window worth watching
A few program-level changes make it more important than usual to double-check that your plan still fits:
- Part D has an out-of-pocket cap of $2,100 in 2026 and $2,400 in 2027. Once your covered drug costs hit that amount, you pay nothing for covered prescriptions the rest of the year.
- The Part D deductible can be no higher than $615 in 2026 and $700 in 2027.
- The coverage gap ("donut hole") is gone. As of 2025, Part D has three phases instead of four.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread your drug costs into monthly payments across the year instead of paying big amounts at the pharmacy counter. You can opt in at any time.
- IRMAA surcharges — the extra amount higher-income enrollees pay on Part B and Part D — begin above $109,000 in income for a single filer in 2026.
If your January pharmacy bill or first doctor visit of the year didn't match what you expected, this is the window to react.
What local availability looks like
Spanish Fork is in Utah County, where Medicare plan availability is set at the county level. That means when you compare options at medicare.gov, the plans you see are the ones offered across Utah County — not just Spanish Fork itself. Availability, networks, and drug lists can change year to year, so the plan that worked in 2025 or 2026 may look different for 2027. Your plan's Annual Notice of Change and Medicare.gov's Plan Finder show the 2027 lineup.
Before switching, it's worth checking two things:
1. Is your doctor or clinic in the new plan's network? Utah County networks vary between carriers. 2. Are your prescriptions on the plan's drug list (formulary), and at what tier? This is the single biggest driver of surprise costs.
How to make a change the right way
You do not have to figure this out alone. Free, unbiased help is available:
- Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov lets you compare plans side by side using your own drug list and pharmacy.
- 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) is open 24/7.
- Utah's SHIP program — the State Health Insurance Assistance Program — offers free one-on-one counseling from trained volunteers. In Utah, this is run through the Department of Aging and Adult Services.
