CHESAPEAKE, Va. — As Annual Enrollment 2027 opens on Oct. 15, 2026, the Medicare Advantage lineup serving Chesapeake looks a lot like last year's — but not exactly. Six carriers are selling plans in the city for 2027, three plans from 2026 are not returning, and six are brand new. The rest either continue, carry a new name, or come back with at least one change to premium, deductible, type or name.

Chesapeake sits inside Chesapeake city, and Medicare Advantage availability is set at the county (or in Virginia, the independent city) level. So when you see a plan count, it applies to Chesapeake city as a whole.

Which carriers sell Medicare Advantage in Chesapeake for 2027?

Six carriers are offering Medicare Advantage plans in Chesapeake city for 2027: Aetna (CVS Health), Elevance Health (Anthem), Humana, Lifeworks Advantage, Sentara Medicare, and UnitedHealthcare. The full carrier-by-carrier roster appears in the table below.

By plan type, the Chesapeake lineup includes HMO, HMO-POS, PPO and PFFS plans. A sizable share are Special Needs Plans (SNPs), which are built for people with specific situations — for example, people who have both Medicare and Medicaid (D-SNPs), people with certain chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease or kidney disease (C-SNPs), or people living in a nursing home (I-SNPs). Most plans in the city include Part D drug coverage; a smaller group does not, and is designed for people who get drug coverage another way (such as through the VA).

What Medicare Advantage plans are new in Chesapeake for 2027?

Six plans are new to Chesapeake city for 2027. In alphabetical order by carrier, they are: Humana DaVita Kidney Care (PPO C-SNP), Humana DaVita Kidney Care (PPO C-SNP), Humana Together in Health (PPO I-SNP), HumanaChoice H7617-125 (PPO), AARP Medicare Advantage Direct Plus from UHC VA-26 (HMO-POS), and AARP Medicare Advantage Extras from UHC VA-30 (HMO-POS).

New plans don't fit everyone — the C-SNP plans, for example, are only open to people with the qualifying chronic condition, and the I-SNP is for people in an institutional setting. Use the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov to see which of these a specific person is eligible for.

Which Chesapeake plans are not returning for 2027?

Three plans available to Chesapeake residents in 2026 will not be offered for 2027: Anthem Full Dual Advantage 2 (HMO D-SNP), AARP Medicare Advantage Access from UHC VA-20 (PPO), and UHC Dual Complete VA-Y3 (HMO-POS D-SNP).

If you are enrolled in one of these plans, you'll get a non-renewal notice from your plan. You then qualify for a Special Enrollment Period that runs from Dec. 8, 2026 through the end of February 2027. During that window you can pick another Medicare Advantage plan or move back to Original Medicare and add a stand-alone Part D plan. You can also make the switch during Annual Enrollment (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7, 2026) if you'd rather have everything lined up before Jan. 1.

My plan has a new name for 2027 — is it the same plan?

Sixteen plans sold in Chesapeake are being renamed for 2027. Examples include Aetna Medicare Signature Plus (HMO-POS), which was Aetna Medicare Signature Care (HMO-POS); Anthem Dual Advantage Plus (HMO D-SNP), which was Anthem Dual Advantage (HMO D-SNP); several Humana plans rebranded as Humana Total Complete (HMO) and Humana Value Choice (PPO); and AARP Medicare Advantage Essentials from UHC VA-8 (HMO-POS), which was AARP Medicare Advantage from UHC VA-0008 (HMO-POS). The table below shows the full before-and-after list.

A renamed plan is still a continuing plan — you don't need to re-enroll. But a rename is often paired with other updates, so read the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) your plan mailed in September to see what, if anything, is different for 2027. In total, 29 plans have at least one change for 2027 to the premium, deductible, type or name, and 48 are continuing.

What should Chesapeake shoppers check before Dec. 7, 2026?

First, check whether your current plan is on the "leaving" list above. If it is, plan on choosing a new plan during Annual Enrollment or during your Special Enrollment Period.

Second, if your plan is continuing or renamed, read the ANOC. Make sure the doctors and hospitals you use are still in network for 2027 and that the drugs you take are still on the formulary. Part D rules change in 2027 as well: the out-of-pocket cap for covered drugs is $2,400 in 2027 (up from $2,100 in 2026), and the maximum Part D deductible is $700 in 2027 (up from $615 in 2026). CMS has not yet announced the 2027 Part B standard premium and deductible or the 2027 IRMAA brackets; those usually come out in November.

Finally, if you do nothing, your current plan simply renews for 2027 with the changes in its ANOC — as long as it's still being offered.

Frequently asked questions

When does Annual Enrollment for 2027 coverage end?
Annual Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, 2026. Any plan change you make during that window takes effect Jan. 1, 2027.
What happens if I do nothing during Annual Enrollment?
If your current Medicare Advantage plan is being offered again in 2027, you stay enrolled automatically — with whatever updates are described in the Annual Notice of Change your plan sent in September. If your plan is one of the three not returning to Chesapeake, your coverage ends and you'll need to pick a new plan.
My plan is leaving — how long do I have to choose a new one?
When your Medicare Advantage plan is non-renewed, Medicare gives you a Special Enrollment Period from Dec. 8, 2026 through the end of February 2027 to join another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare with a stand-alone Part D plan. You can also make the switch earlier, during Annual Enrollment.
Where can I compare the Chesapeake plans side by side?
Use the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov, which shows every 2027 Medicare Advantage and Part D plan available in Chesapeake city along with its premium, deductible, drug list and provider directory. For personal help, call 1-800-MEDICARE, which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
