What is Medigap and how is it different from Medicare Advantage in Delaware?

A Medigap policy in Delaware is private insurance that works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to help pay the deductibles, coinsurance and copays Medicare leaves to the patient. Medicare Advantage (Part C), by contrast, replaces how you receive your Medicare benefits — a private plan takes on Parts A and B and usually bundles in drug coverage and extras, often with a provider network.

You cannot be enrolled in both a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medigap policy at the same time. Medigap pairs with Original Medicare, where you can see any provider in the country that accepts Medicare, and most people add a separate Part D drug plan. The plans themselves are standardized by the federal government, so Plan G from one insurer covers the same federally defined benefits as Plan G from another.

Which insurers sell Medigap in Delaware and which plan letters do they offer?

For ZIP code 19801, Medicare.gov's Medigap policy search lists these 20 insurers, with the standardized plan letters shown for each. Availability can differ by ZIP code and by age, sex and tobacco use, so your own search may vary.

Across the list, the plan letters sold by at least one Delaware insurer are A, B, C, D, F, F-HD, G, G-HD, K, L and N. Plans C and F are closed to people who became newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. This article does not list premiums or benefits — those come from each plan's or insurer's own documents, or from Medicare.gov.

When is the Medigap Open Enrollment Period in Delaware and why does it matter?

Your personal Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a one-time, six-month window that begins the first month you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During those six months, an insurer selling Medigap in Delaware must sell you any policy it offers at its best available rate class for your age, regardless of your health history.

Outside that window, insurers in most states can use medical underwriting to decide whether to issue a policy and what to charge, unless you qualify for a separate guaranteed-issue right. That is why the six months matter: it is the easiest time, by federal rule, to pick among the plan letters above.

What happens if my Medicare Advantage plan is not returning to Delaware in 2027?

Three Medicare Advantage plans offered somewhere in Delaware in 2026 will not be offered anywhere in the state in 2027, according to the CMS Landscape files. If you are enrolled in one of those non-renewing plans, you receive a federal guaranteed-issue right to buy certain Medigap policies without medical underwriting.

Guaranteed issue means an insurer must sell you one of the specified Medigap plans, cannot turn you down for health reasons, and cannot charge you more because of your health. The exact plan letters you can buy under this right, and the deadline to use it, are described on Medicare.gov; your plan's non-renewal notice will also spell out your options.

Does Medigap cover prescriptions in Delaware, or do I need a separate Part D plan?

Medigap policies sold in Delaware today do not include prescription drug coverage. To get drug coverage with Original Medicare and a Medigap policy, you enroll separately in a stand-alone Medicare Part D plan.

For 2027, the Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,400 (up from $2,100 in 2026), the most any Part D plan may charge as a deductible is $700, and the Part D base beneficiary premium used in the late-enrollment penalty formula is $41.33. Individual plan premiums are set plan by plan. Annual Enrollment for 2027 runs October 15 – December 7, 2026, and choices made in that window take effect January 1, 2027.

How should I compare Medigap policies in Delaware?

Start with the plan letter, because the federal standardization means Plan G, Plan N and the others cover the same benefits no matter which insurer sells them in Delaware. From there, differences between insurers come down to price, how rates change over time, customer service, and extras an insurer may bundle around the standardized benefits.

The Medigap policy search at Medicare.gov lets you enter your ZIP code and see which insurers file policies for your area; it also links to each insurer's contact information so you can request an outline of coverage. The Social Security Administration announced a 3.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment for benefits payable beginning January 2027, which affects Social Security checks but is separate from how Medigap premiums are set.

Where can Delaware residents get free help with Medicare questions?

Medicare.gov is the official place to compare Medigap policies, Part D drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans side by side using your own ZIP code and, for drug plans, your own medication list. The site is run by CMS and has no sales incentive.

You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to ask about enrollment periods, guaranteed-issue rights, and how Medigap, Part D and Medicare Advantage fit together.

Frequently asked questions

Do all 20 insurers listed for ZIP 19801 sell the same Medigap plans across Delaware?
Not necessarily. Medicare.gov's Medigap policy search returns results by ZIP code, and what is sold can differ by ZIP code as well as by age, sex and tobacco use. The 20 insurers and plan letters in this article reflect what the search shows for ZIP 19801; running the search for your own ZIP code is the way to see what is available where you live.
Can I switch from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare plus Medigap in Delaware?
You can change between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare during Annual Enrollment, which runs October 15 – December 7, 2026 for coverage starting January 1, 2027. Buying a Medigap policy after your initial six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period may involve medical underwriting unless you qualify for a guaranteed-issue right, such as being in a Medicare Advantage plan that is not returning. Call 1-800-MEDICARE to walk through your situation.
Are Plans C and F still available to new Delaware enrollees?
Plans C and F remain in the Delaware market and are listed above because insurers continue to offer them to people already eligible, but they are closed to anyone who became newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. If you are newly eligible, the Medigap policy search on Medicare.gov will show you the plan letters open to you.
Does Medigap cover prescription drugs in Delaware for 2027?
No. Medigap policies sold today do not include drug coverage, so you add a stand-alone Part D plan if you want prescription coverage with Original Medicare. For 2027, Part D has a $2,400 out-of-pocket cap, a maximum allowed deductible of $700, and a base beneficiary premium of $41.33 used in the late-enrollment penalty calculation.
