Medigap in Fort Wayne: which plan letters Indiana still sells, and how they fit with Original Medicare
Fort Wayne is in Allen County, and if you have Original Medicare here, a Medigap policy is one of the main ways to make your out-of-pocket costs more predictable. The letters you can buy, and the rules that shape when you can buy them, are set at the federal and state level — not by ZIP code — so the menu in Fort Wayne is the same menu the rest of Indiana sees.

- People newly eligible for Medicare can buy Plans A, B, D, G, G-HD, K, L, M or N in Indiana; Plans C and F are closed to anyone who became eligible on or after January 1, 2020.
- Medigap works only with Original Medicare (Parts A and B); it does not pair with a Medicare Advantage plan, and it does not include drug coverage, so most people also enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan.
- Your strongest window to buy any Medigap policy sold in Indiana is your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts the month your Part B begins and you are 65 or older.
- The plan letters are standardized by federal law, so a Plan G from one insurer covers the same medical benefits as a Plan G from another — what differs is price, customer service and how each company handles rate increases over time.
Here is what that menu actually looks like today, how it lines up with Part A, Part B and a stand-alone Part D drug plan, and where to go for the Indiana-specific rules that can affect your timing.
The plan letters you can actually buy in Indiana
Medigap policies sold in most of the country, including Indiana, follow federal standardization. That means the benefits inside each lettered plan are set by Medicare, not by the insurance company. A Plan N is a Plan N, whether you buy it in Fort Wayne, Indianapolis or Evansville.
If you are newly eligible for Medicare today, these are the letters open to you in Indiana:
- Plan A
- Plan B
- Plan D
- Plan G (and a high-deductible version, Plan G-HD)
- Plan K
- Plan L
- Plan M
- Plan N
Plans C and F are still on the market, but only for people who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. If that is you, and you never enrolled, you may still be able to buy one.
Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin standardize their Medigap plans differently. Indiana does not, so the federal letters above are what apply here.
How Medigap fits with Original Medicare and Part D
A Medigap policy sits on top of Original Medicare. Medicare pays its share of a covered hospital or doctor bill first, and your Medigap plan then pays some or all of what is left — the Part A hospital coinsurance, the Part B coinsurance, and other cost-sharing depending on the letter you choose.
A few points that trip people up:
- Medigap does not work with Medicare Advantage. You can have one or the other, not both. If you are enrolled in an Advantage plan, a Medigap policy cannot pay your cost-sharing.
- Medigap does not include prescription drug coverage. To get drugs covered, most people add a stand-alone Part D plan.
- Medigap does not cover routine dental, vision or hearing.
For 2026, Part D has a maximum deductible of $615 and a $2,100 annual out-of-pocket cap on covered drugs. The old coverage gap ("donut hole") is gone as of 2025 — there are now three phases instead of four. If your drug costs bunch up early in the year, you can also ask your Part D plan about the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, which spreads those costs across monthly bills.
The insurers selling Medigap in Fort Wayne
The table below lists every insurer that files Medigap policies in Indiana, along with the letters each one offers. In alphabetical order the list starts with AARP - UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company and AARP - UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company of America and runs through carriers like Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield - Indiana, Humana, Mutual of Omaha (Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company), State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, USAA Life Insurance Company and WoodmenLife.
Not every insurer sells every letter. For example, some carriers offer only Plans A, F, G and N, while others — such as United American Insurance Company — file a longer list including B, D, K and L. If a specific letter matters to you, use the table to see which companies actually offer it in Indiana.
Because the medical benefits inside each letter are identical from company to company, the shopping question is not "which insurer has the best Plan G?" It is: for the letter I want, how does each company price it, how do they raise rates over time, and how do they handle customer service and underwriting?
The rules that shape your choice
Two federal rules do most of the heavy lifting for Medigap timing in Indiana:
Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This is a one-time, six-month window that starts the first month you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During this window, any insurer selling Medigap in Indiana must sell you any policy they offer, at their best available rate class, without medical underwriting. Miss it, and in most cases insurers can ask health questions and turn you down or charge more.
Guaranteed issue rights. In certain situations — for example, if your employer coverage ends or a Medicare Advantage plan leaves your area — federal law gives you a limited right to buy specific Medigap letters without underwriting. The letters available under guaranteed issue are narrower than the full menu.
Some states add extra protections on top of federal law, such as annual "birthday rules" that let people switch Medigap plans without underwriting. Indiana's specific rules can change, so confirm current rights with the Indiana Department of Insurance or the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) before you shop.
Under 65 and on Medicare because of disability? Federal law does not require insurers to sell you a Medigap policy, but some Indiana carriers do offer options. Ask each insurer directly, or ask SHIP.
How to shop without getting overwhelmed
A workable order of operations for Fort Wayne shoppers:
1. Decide whether you want Original Medicare with a Medigap and a Part D plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan. You cannot combine the two. 2. If you go the Medigap route, pick the letter first — that decides what is covered. 3. Then compare the insurers that sell that letter in Indiana. Ask each for their current rate, how they set rates (attained-age, issue-age or community-rated), and their recent rate history. 4. Enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan during your Initial Enrollment Period, or during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) if you are switching later.
If your income is above $109,000 as a single filer in 2026, an IRMAA surcharge may apply to your Part B and Part D premiums. That is a program-level rule and is not something a Medigap policy changes.
