Is Medigap in Lexington Right for Your Coverage?

If you live in Lexington and you're pairing Original Medicare with a Medigap policy, the first thing to know is that Medigap plans are standardized by letter across most of the country. That means a Plan G sold by one company covers the same core benefits as a Plan G sold by another. What changes is the price and the company behind it — not the benefits on the page.

Key takeaways

  • People newly eligible for Medicare in Kentucky can buy Medigap Plans A, B, D, G, G-High Deductible, K, L, M, and N.
  • Plans C and F are closed to anyone who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.
  • Medigap works only with Original Medicare (Parts A and B), and it does not include drug coverage — you add a separate Part D plan for that.
  • Your strongest shopping window is your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts when you're 65 and enrolled in Part B.

Kentucky follows the federal standardized letters, so your choices in Lexington come from the same menu used in most states. Lexington sits in Fayette County, and while Medicare Advantage plan availability is set at the county level, Medigap is regulated at the state level, which means the letters below are what any Kentucky resident can shop.

The plan letters you can buy in Kentucky

If you're newly eligible for Medicare today, Kentucky offers these standardized Medigap letters: A, B, D, G, G-High Deductible, K, L, M, and N. Each letter is a fixed package of benefits set by federal rules. Plan G at one insurer covers the same things as Plan G at another; the difference is what each company charges and how it raises rates over time.

Two letters — C and F — are only available to people who became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. If that's you, you can still buy or keep them. If you turned 65 after that date, they're off the table.

Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin standardize Medigap differently, but Kentucky doesn't — so the federal letter chart is what applies here.

How Medigap fits with Original Medicare and Part D

Medigap is designed to pair with Original Medicare (Part A hospital and Part B medical). After Medicare pays its share, your Medigap policy picks up some or all of what's left — things like coinsurance, copays, and, depending on the letter, the Part A or Part B deductible.

Medigap does not include prescription drug coverage. If you want drug coverage, you enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan separately. In 2026, Part D has a $2,100 annual out-of-pocket cap and a maximum deductible of $615. The old coverage gap ("donut hole") was eliminated in 2025, so Part D now works in three phases. You can also opt into the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, which spreads your drug costs evenly across the year.

One more important rule: you can't have both a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medigap policy at the same time. Medigap only works with Original Medicare.

The rules that shape your choice in Kentucky

Timing matters more than most people realize. During your Medigap Open Enrollment Period — the six months that begin the month you're 65 and enrolled in Part B — insurers must sell you any Medigap policy they offer at their best available rate, regardless of your health. This is called guaranteed issue.

Outside that window, in most cases insurers in Kentucky can use medical underwriting, which means they can review your health and either charge more or decline coverage. There are limited federal guaranteed-issue rights outside the initial window (for example, if certain coverage ends involuntarily), and some states have added protections beyond federal law. For Kentucky-specific rights and any special enrollment situations, check with the Kentucky Department of Insurance or your local SHIP counselor — they can walk you through your case.

How Medigap policies are priced

Every insurer selling Medigap uses one of three pricing methods:

Two policies with the same letter can cost very different amounts over 10 or 20 years depending on which method the company uses. When you compare quotes, ask which pricing method applies — it matters as much as the starting premium.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch Medigap plans in Kentucky after my first six months?
Yes, but outside your Medigap Open Enrollment Period an insurer can usually ask health questions and may charge more or decline you. There are some limited situations where you have a guaranteed-issue right to switch. Contact the Kentucky Department of Insurance or your local SHIP to find out whether your situation qualifies.
Do I still need Part D if I have Medigap?
Yes, if you want prescription drug coverage. Medigap does not cover most outpatient prescription drugs. You'd enroll in a separate stand-alone Part D plan. Going without creditable drug coverage can lead to a late enrollment penalty later.
Can I buy Plan F or Plan C in Kentucky?
Only if you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. If you became eligible on or after that date, these two letters are closed to you under federal law. Plans D, G, and N cover many similar benefits and are open to newly eligible enrollees.
Does Medigap work with Medicare Advantage?
No. Medigap only pairs with Original Medicare. If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, a Medigap policy can't pay your Advantage plan's cost-sharing. ## Where to get help For personalized guidance in Lexington, start with the **Kentucky SHIP**, the **Kentucky Department of Insurance**, or **Medicare.gov**.
